MY BROTHER
You came upon the scene just before my 6th birthday. My, you were cute. Everyone adored you, including big brother. For quite a while Mother had you in a pageboy haircut, making people wonder.
We were close in our small apartment, but we had a vast outdoor playground with lake, woods, swamp and playmates. I teased you and took care of you. As a Boy Scout, I was Den Chief for your Cubs for a short time. You helped me crawl under one of the apartment buildings to extract some left-over metal window frames which we made the wartime recycling center at the end of Stonehenge Lane.
Eventually the age difference kept us more apart. After I graduated and left for the Air Force, we could not be as close. You inherited some of my stuff. College took me off to Cornell.
I was proud of your service in the Marines; I was happy that you found a lovely girl to be your wife. And I thought your kids were top notch. I hate to say this in front of my wife, but you may have been better at couponing than I.
For the few years that business took me from Rochester to Middletown, I brought some childhood books, samples of pharmaceutical products, visited and took you to dinner. We also had a long series of family reunions so that our families knew each other even though the miles kept us apart. Yeah, Uncle Charlie Day was a musical blast from your kids.
You and I were always on the best of terms. (Maybe except on the subject of smoking.)
I will miss you. I miss you already. I hope that our families will remain in contact.

This will confirm that Charles and Marjorie Sumner donated to Wounded Warriors in Richard's honor. At the time they doubled the donation amount. Also, Nashville Chapter Americans United for Separation of Church and State kindly made a donation - probably also doubled.
The best big brother a girl could ever ask for...
