Shirley Hannigan Obituary

Montgomery, NY

Shirley Marie Hannigan of Montgomery, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, the 9th of July, 2008 with her family at her side.

Daughter of the late Ernest and Agnes Tuthill, she was born in Newburgh on January 10, 1933. She was the widow of Ronald Hannigan.

Shirley was a 1951 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, and a retired switchboard operator for New York Telephone and St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh. She was also a member of St. George's Episcopal Church and the Moose Lodge.

A family statement reads: "Mom's life was her family and friends. She looked forward to and enjoyed all of the holidays and family get togethers, and always brought along her famous brownies and potato salad. She served as a great role model for her children and grandchildren through her good heartedness, love of animals and kindness to others. Everyone that met her loved her. She was also fiercely independent, having lived alone, by her choice, for many years and evidenced by her courageous battle with sickness during the last days of her life. She is already sorely missed and will always live on in our hearts."

She is survived by her children: daughters, Sherrilynn Lengyel and her husband, James of Bangor, PA, Susan Dabroski and her husband, Stan of Newburgh; and son, Charles W. Hunter Jr. and his wife, Kathy of New Windsor; grandchildren, Stacie Baldwin and her husband, Jeff of Virginia, Stephanie Darrer of Walden, Scott, Sean and Stephen Dabroski, all of Newburgh, Kristen and Charles Hunter of New Windsor. She is also survived by her sister, Edith Hamilton of Pine Bush; brother-in-law, John Morgan of Ft. Lauderdale, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Ernest and Bernard Tuthill; sisters, Evelyn Canfield and Joyce Morgan; and her first husband Charles Hunter.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY 12550.

A Funeral Service will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 14, at St. George's Episcopal Church, Newburgh.

Entombment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.

I have very fond memories of Shirley from many years ago when my girls were growing up (Nancy & Kathleen). As her sister,Joyce, was my best friend I felt like a part of the Tuthill family and looked on her as another sister.

I was so sorry to hear about Shirley's passing. I grew up with Sherrie as my best friend and shared a lot of family times with her, Susie and Chucky as she did with my family. Sharing the same birthday as Sherrie has always been special and the last time I talked to Shirley was on my 50th birthday. She had called me at my mother's home to say hi and get me back in touch with Sherrie. I will always be grateful for that - she was always thinking of others. That's not to say that she ever let me get away with anything - when I needed a talking to she did it. She was always like a second Mom to me. She will be missed and I will always have fond memories of being included as part of their family. Love always, Joanne

Our thoughts and prayers go out to my Cousins and there families and Aunt Edie at this sad time. after hearing the news this evening my thoughts drifted back to when i was young and the many great times i had spent with aunt shirley. one thought that kept coming to my memory was the times when my 3 aunts shirley, edie and joyce used to sing together, i can almost hear the harmonies. she was a great lady, a loving aunt and although i had not seen her in many years she was in my thoughts. she will be missed. but i am sure the pain and suffering are now gone and that she is sitting happily with my dad and all the others in our families that have passed. god bless you all.

She never lost her faith. She was a wonderful sister and mother. Sherri, Susie and Chuckie I want you to know that I am here for all of you. Shirley will always be in my thoughts and prayers and forever in my heart.

We loved Aunt Shirley. She was the most considerate and loving person and always ready to help us. She always had a smile on her face and loved her family. I have only been in her life for 8 years when I married her nephew and in those 8 years I have grown to love her like a mom. We will truely miss her. She will always hold a special place in our hearts.
