Vincent Tassielli Obituary
Walden, NY Vincent Pietro Tassielli, a lifelong resident of Walden and Highland Falls, died on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Cornwall Campus. He was 78. "Vince", as he was known to friends, was born on October 9, 1929 in Highland Falls to Pietro and Louise (nee Zazzi) Tassielli. He grew up in a family home on Church Street. In 1947, he graduated from Highland Falls High School and promptly entered the military, serving approximately 20 years until 1968, during which time he earned numerous medals and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. Many years of his tenure were spent in Army Intelligence, in Europe in a unit which handled Russian defectors and refugees from behind the Iron Curtain. In addition to West Point, Walden and Highland Falls, Vince also lived in Italy, Austria, Germany and Alaska. He retired from the military in 1968, but continued service at West Point as Produce Manager at the Commissary for another 21 years, retiring in 1990. Shortly after retirement from the Army, in 1972, Vince married his beloved wife, the former Jessica Trepacz. They settled in Walden, where they built a home and became active parishioners of Most Precious Blood Church, while retaining strong ties to Highland Falls. Vince and Jessica were also active volunteers with the Fresh Air Fund, opening their home each summer to children from New York who lived with them and were able to enjoy the beauty of Orange County for a while. In 1996, Vince was devastated by the death of Jessica. He expressed gladness in his final days, knowing that he and his beloved wife would finally be reunited. Vince was also predeceased by his parents and a beloved sister, Mary, who also worked at West Point under General Westmoreland, until her death in 1961. Vincent Tassielli was a kind and generous man who brightened the lives of many with his wit, strong opinions and love. He was the kind of person who quietly helped others, without seeking thanks or credit. He also loved animals, and in spite of his illness, cared for a beloved dog he named Sam until Sam's death last year. The world has lost someone special with Vince's passing, and he will be greatly missed. A Funeral Mass celebrating Vince's life will take place on Monday, July 14, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 353 Main St., Highland Falls, with the Rev. Jack Arlotta officiating. Following the mass, burial will occur with military honors at Post Cemetery in West Point. Funeral arrangements were made by William F. Hogan Funeral Home, Highland Falls; 845-446-2868.
