Willard Lloyd Obituary

Willard E. Lloyd, 81, passed away May 26, 2006, after a long illness. He was the son of Anna B. Evans and Willard W. Lloyd. Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he graduated from G.A.R. High School, and proudly served in the U.S. Army Infantry in the Pacific during World War II.

He received a Bachelor's degree from Mansfield (Pa.) University, a Master's from Bucknell University and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education from Johns Hopkins. He taught high school math in Port Jervis, before becoming junior high school vice-principal, and then senior high school principal. Later, as an Assistant Professor at Towson (Md.) University, he taught education curriculum, and supervised student teachers. Returning to New York he was principal of the Scotia-Glenville Junior High School. After retiring he returned to his education roots by teaching math at Schenectady Community College.

Mr. Lloyd was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, in the stockade section of Schenectady, where he served on the Operations Board; was Treasurer of the Gideon Bible Society; served meals at the City Mission; shared weekly fellowship with members of the Pairs and Spares group from the East Glenville Church, and was lovingly devoted to his family and friends.

He was very proud of his Welsh ancestry, and was a member of the Welsh Society of the Capitol District. A music lover, he attended many Welsh Eisteddfod and Gymanfa Ganu singing and music festivals, and also attending his son, Will's directing Ithaca High School band concerts. He enjoyed sports, loved walking, swimming at the Y.M.C.A., collected humorous stories, reflecting his witty sense of humor and engaging smile; loved to vacation in the Pocono Mountains; and was faithful in his daily devotions.

He was married for 50 years to Elizabeth Ann Pierce, who predeceased him in 1977. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Morrison, of Rotterdam; son, Willard Evan Lloyd, Jr., of Ithaca, sister, Nola Lloyd Nikel, and husband, Bill, of West Caldwell, N.J.; gradchildren, Jonathan, Daniel and Evan Morrison, Amanda and Tommy Lloyd, great- granddaughter, Lillyann Morrison, and many dear nieces and nephews.

A family gravsite service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2006 at Schenectady Memorial Park, followed by a Memorial Service for family and friends at the First Presbyterian Church, in the Stockade section of Schenectady on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. Calling hours are Wednesday, May 31, 2006 from 6-8 p.m. at Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, Scotia, N.Y.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Gideon Bible Society, and the City Mission of Schenectady.

The family would like to thank the staff of Ellis Hospital's Sunnyview Rehabilitation Center, and Northwoods-Hilltop for their compassionate care of Willard during his stays there.

Thank you Mr. Lloyd. I was one of the thousands of lucky students you taught and left with fond memories of a dedicated and compassionate teacher. You are one of those teachers who left a lifetime impression that helped mold my life in a positive way. Thank you again and God bless you and yours.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the "Family" of Mr. Lloyd. He was a wonderful teacher, principal and friend when I was a student in Port Jervis High School.

To the family,

Mr. Lloyd was one of my math

teachers at Port Jervis High

School in the early 1960's.

As I remember, he was

always engaging, challenging

us to take the extra step.

Did I always listen....no.

But, that is to my chagrin. It

certainly was not for Mr. Lloyd

not trying.

He was one of those teachers

and human beings who made

school bearable. I thank him

greatly for that. And somewhere

in the recesses of my brain,

some of his teaching stuck.

He was that good!

Yours truly,

John Ihrig,

radio journalist.

Lloyd family; I received this information from one of my classmates, class of 1964. I just wanted to send my condolences to you and be remembered to you. You were good friends of my grandparents and parents as we were growing up, as well as us kids, who are not kids anymore. God speed to each of you. Bob Carlton
