William Flynn Obituary

Middletown, NY

William H. Flynn, Sr., after a long, courageous battle with cancer, entered into rest on Thursday, October 16, 2008, at O.R.M.C., Horton Campus in Middletown, NY, with his loving family by his bedside.

A life-long resident of Middletown, after 41 years of service, Bill retired as a Substation Foreman with Orange & Rockland Utilities in Middletown.

The son of Charles E. and Mildred Stillwell Flynn, he was born September 24, 1936 in Middletown, NY. He was the husband of Shirley Dodd Flynn, who resides at home. He was 72 years old.

Bill had served in the National Guard and was a member of the Mountain Top Gun Club.

A family statement reads: "A loving husband, father and grandfather, his passion in life was his family, watching his grandchildren. Whether it was on the field or on stage, he was always there. After retirement, he spent most of his days working with his daughter, JoAnn, and his son-in-law, Rob, in the Maxwell's Kitchen at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Anyone who came into contact with Bill embraced his warm smile and sense of humor. He loved the races, cheering in the stands for his nephew, Steve Dodd #88 and Brett Hearn with Eastern States Weekend always being the highlight of the season. He enjoyed a good card game and all he hoped for was to make one more trip to the islands with Shirley, his loving wife. This loving, sweet man suffered long enough. May you finally rest in peace, dad, under a swaying palm tree with a frozen Pina Colada! The family would like to extend sincere appreciation for all Hospice has done with helping us care for him at home as long as we could and to Dr. Strober, for taking the time to make those "house calls" you just don't hear about today. Thank you! It meant the world to Bill."

In addition to his wife, Shirley, Bill is survived by a son, William H. Flynn, Jr. and his fiancé, Kathlene McLemore of Bloomingburg, NY; a daughter, JoAnn Maxwell and her husband, Rob of Otisville, NY; grandchildren: Brandon, Tyler and Kiersten Flynn and Karisa & Bobby Maxwell; step-grandchildren: Lindsay McAvoy-Osborn, Savannah McLemore and Cassidy McLemore; two brothers, Charles E. Flynn, Jr. and his wife, Elaine of Slate Hill, NY and Bryce Flynn and his wife, Shirley, also of Slate Hill; mother-in-law, Jean Dodd of Middletown, NY; brother-in-law, Gary S. Dodd of Yankee Lake, NY; cousin, Carol Wentzel of Goshen, NY; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael D. Flynn.

Friends may call at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown, on Monday, October 20, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Ridgebury Cemetery, in Ridgebury, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Ct., Newburgh, NY 12550.

Awh, how the tears just roll down my face thinking of Mr. Flynn. I'm so sorry Mrs. Flynn, Billy and Joann. I send you and your extended family much love during this sad, sad time in your life. It's never easy; even if you know the battle can't be won. Mr. Flynn certainly won my heart. I had a special little bond with him referring to me as "Barney"..because I drove up my parents driveway quite fast. Ya see, Barney was a race car driver! Much love and sympathies. Dear Shirley & Family,

Myself, also an O&R employee, although working in a different dept than Bill, would on occasion be needed to work together. Whenever that would occur, I could always count on a warm smile, hardy handshake and a great day.

I hope everyone can find some solace knowing that Bill is in a better place and his suffering is over. His memories endure.

Sincerely,
John & Kathy Watts

Dear Mrs. Flynn, Billy, and JoAnn,

For 40 years, I've said, "Hi, Mr. Flynn!" whether he was in the back yard, on the front porch, getting in or out of his truck, or visiting with my parents. Now, with a heavy heart, I have to say, "'Bye, Mr. Flynn."

Mr. Flynn has been a great neighbor and friend to the Hunt family. He shared many a beer with my dad. He helped my dad with a lot of household electrical projects. He was the only other dad I knew who wore Moccasins. He was a kind and generous man.

My sincerest sympathy to you all.

Love,
Maureen A. Hunt
