David Karl Maierhofer, 61, died March 29, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona, and was laid to rest on October 14, 2023, in Michigan at the Benzonia Township Cemetery. He was born October 16, 1961, in Peoria, Illinois, to Karl Jacob Maierhofer and Janet Masters Schuman, both Chicago natives, and he was proud of his Chicago roots. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Keith Schuman, of Martinsville, Indiana; his daughter, Devin Bos (Daniel) and two young grandchildren, Benjamin and Evelyn Bos, of Phoenix; his son, Christian David Maierhofer of Phoenix; his sister Laurie Sparling of Blyth, Ontario, Canada; two nieces, one nephew, and his former wife, Jan Carteaux of Scottsdale, his children's mother and lifelong friend. He was preceded in death by his sister Kristin McGrath as well as his father.
David was a 1979 graduate of Naperville North High School and a National Merit Scholar. He was graduated from Indiana University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in quantitative business analysis and in 1984 with an MBA in management information systems. An avid distance runner for more than 35 years, averaging six miles a day whether there was a blizzard or excessive heat warning, he ran track and cross country in high school and was on the IU cross country team freshman year until suffering an injury. He subsequently rode in the IU Little 500 bike race his junior and senior years for his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, the team qualifying for the pole position his senior year. He also served as Sig Ep treasurer his junior and senior years.
David started his business career at Allison Gas Turbines division of General Motors in Indianapolis as a systems analyst before taking a position as a systems engineering manager at Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in Plano, Texas. He was a management consultant at Price Waterhouse, Dallas, for several years, eventually moving to London, England, as IT director for United Distillers, a division of Guinness. After returning to the States, he was a senior manager for Ernst & Young in Chicago and then in Phoenix.
An avid reader, David was passionate about his work. After roles of directorship at Answerthink and senior vice president and CIO at Mariner Health Care, he created his own firms, Armada Consulting Group, LLC, and Masters-Somerset, LLC, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In recent years, David converted to Catholicism and attended St. Mary's Basilica in Phoenix and managed sober living facilities around the Phoenix Valley.
A beloved son, father, and brother, David was laid to rest next to his sister, Kristin; maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Ruth Masters; and his one uncle, Ken Masters, at the Benzonia, Michigan, cemetery. Crystal Lake was dear to David as he was the fifth generation to summer at the family cottages on Crystal Lake, his earthly resting place now nearby a place filled with so many happy memories.
