I just learned of Tom's death. I had the privilege of getting to know him personally starting in 2021 though his reputation as a leader in child welfare had long preceded my own personal connection to him. The circumstances of my getting to know hom were unusual: he had written an article with Jess McDonald, agreeing with an article I had also published on the need to stop treating poverty as equivalent to child neglect. A long dialogue with Tom and Jess and other family advocates I had worked with for many years ensued. This broke barriers between advocates and administrators and I discovered very quickly how encyclopedic Tom's knowledge was and how pragmatic and wise he was. From then on, he would often send me articles of interest and enlighten me on things about the child welfare system I had not understood. This has led me to my big regret about Tom: I just wish I had known him thirty or forty years earlier. Even as it is, he has given me tools and understandings that have been very significant in my own continuing advocacy for families. He was a giant in our field and he will be missed.

Mr. Morton was a great man who made very positive impacts in the lives of the most vulnerable. He made the world better for many.
