Carl Schoelkopf Obituary
1934 - 2014
Carl Schoelkopf passed away April 6th on Bainbridge Island, WA. He was 80 years old. Born in Port Huron, MI, on April 19, 1934, he was the youngest son of Freidrich and Martha Schoelkopf.
He served in the United States Army and graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in history. He also did graduate work at Stanford University. In San Diego, he met his wife of 57 years, Mary, and they moved to Redding, CA, to raise their family. Carl was a teacher at Enterprise High School for many years and also worked as an administrator at Big Valley high School. After retiring from education, he worked in real estate until his retirement. His true passion in life was pigeon racing and he became an expert in pigeon genetics and breeding for racing potential. He was a long time member of the Shasta Racing Pigeon Club.
He was well read on many subjects, but was especially passionate about the history of Native Americans, the Civil War, and World War II. He was a writer, a poet, and had an outstanding sense of humor.
He leaves behind his wife, Mary, his son John Schoelkopf (Lora), daughter Julia King (James), and grandchildren Johann Schoelkopf (Hailey), Stefan Schoelkopf, Jenna Schoelkopf, Emma King and Tristan King, as well as many dear friends.
He will be missed terribly.
He requested no formal service.

I will always remember Carl as a real gentleman, and there just aren't enough of those anymore. He loved to tell stories and I loved to hear them. He knew this areas history and loved to talk about it. Naturally there were many pigeon stories too. He had a great sense of humor which came out in his stories. He will always be missed. Thinking of you Mary.

I was in Mr. Schoelkopf's German class for most of High School. Mr. Schoelkopf was a wonderful teacher and mentor. We were very fortunate to have had him for a teacher.

I had the good fortune to teach at EHS while Carl was there. I took over the German Department from him when I arrived in 1969. He was a good friend and wise leader at EHS.

Schoelkopf family, my prayers and thoughts are with you all. Carl was a wonderful teacher and friend and I was lucky enough to have his guidance during my first year back home from Virginia. New school and also new town blues were all put behind me due to his friendship and help during my difficult time. He made a difference in my life and I will always remember him with great admiration and fondness.

I only attended EHS during my senior year and am grateful that I was able to spend one semester under Carl's teaching. He's the only teacher I remember from EHS and he and I 'clicked'. I have thought of him many times since graduating in '77 and no doubt will continue to. I pray for comfort for his family.
Carl and I got together on August 12, 2011.

Today is Carl Schoelkopf's 80th birthday. It is ironically the day that I found out that he had just died. He was a colleague, good friend, and a mentor who led me through dark bureaucratic times in my teaching career. I had the good fortune of getting together with Carl in one of my occasional visits to Redding in August of 2011. Here's to you, Carl. You impacted my life in a remarkable way.
