James Dominic Sartor

1924 - 2013

James Sartor died peacefully on June 3, 2013 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Mt. Shasta.

Jim was born on October 31, 1924 to Joe and Julia Sartor of Mt. Shasta. He attended Mt. Shasta Elementary School and Mt. Shasta High School, graduating in 1942. He was immediately inducted into the U.S. Air Force, and was discharged in 1945.

In 1946, Jim married Gloria Greenman and moved to Reno, Nevada, where he attended the University of Nevada. He graduated with a degree in engineering in June of 1950. He and Gloria became the proud parents of Michael (1951), Valerie (1953) and Leslie (1957). Gloria passed away in 1983.

Jim began his professional career with the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory at Hunter's Point in San Francisco. He participated in numerous atomic bomb tests in Nevada and the South Pacific. In 1962 he began working for the Stanford Research Institute doing research for the Agency for International Development in Zambia, Ethiopia and Costa Rica. He later worked for the United Research Service doing similar projects around the world. In 1972, Jim was hired by the Woodward Clyde consulting firm as an environmental consultant. He later became the Executive Vice President for the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii. He retired in 1994. He considered his greatest professional achievement to be his supervision of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Clean-up in Alaska.

After retirement, Jim moved back to his childhood home in Mt. Shasta. He became active in community affairs by serving as a planning commission member, a founding father of Friends of the Rink, an officer in the Knights of Columbus and member of SIRS and a docent for the Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum. He was also an avid golfer and fly fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Virginia Sartor; his son, Michael (Sue) Sartor of Menlo Park; daughters, Valerie Goines (Michael) of Redwood City and Leslie Sartor (Michael) of Houston, Texas. Jim was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren who have inherited his strong values and love for family: Kate Goines, James Goines, Annie Sartor, Jamin Sartor, Claire McGroder and Hannah McGroder. Several cousins also survive him. Jim is also survived by seven stepchildren: Ted Badasci of Boise, ID, Kathleen Badasci of New York, NY, John Badasci of Fresno, Sylvia Badasci of Boise, ID, Rosemary Perrot of Paris, France, Stephanie Badasci of Santa Barbara and Barbara Lauletta of Downington, PA. His step grandchildren are: Mathew Badasci, Jennifer Badasci, Collette Shabram, Gina Icenogle, Alex Badasci, Theo Badasci, Gabrielle Lindmeier, Tyler Lauletta, Russell Lauletta and Valentin Perrot. His great grandchildren include: Lawrence Icenogle, Chelsy Icenogle, Jacob Procell, Sydney Badasci, and Nicholas Badasci.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Willow Springs Care Center in Redding and especially his caregiver, Marvie Wilkerson, for the loving care he was given throughout his illness.
