Jerry Waltman Obituary

Jerry Waltman
1946 - 2012

Gerald (Jerry) Scott Waltman passed on May 6, 2012 in Redding, CA. Jerry is survived by his wife, Bronla, daughters Kelly and son-in-law Rork Crusto, Meagan Frye, sons Russell Middleton, Everett and daughter-in-law Amber Middleton, his six grandchildren, Rork, Gerald, Hannah, Callen, Layla-Rose and Brianne, his good friend and brother-in-law Phillip McClure, including many nieces and nephews. He was born to John and Beatrice Waltman on November 6, 1946 in Indianapolis. His brother John Waltman, Jr and sister Judy McClure predeceased him. Jerry volunteered in the United States Navy right out of high school. After Nuclear Power School he served three tours in Viet Nam.

When he left the Navy, he found the career of his dreams with the Oakland Police Department in 1971. He served with Oakland for 20 years, retired and went on to another step in his life with the San Leandro Police Department for an additional 8 years. He retired again in December of 1998 and moved to Redding where he worked part time as a boating safety officer for the Shasta County Sheriff's office for 2 years. Jerry took great pride in his career as a police officer; it was one of his greatest joys to have worked in a job he loved so much. Jerry had an uncanny ability to recall suspect's names, dates of birth and addresses of who they all were, often amazing his co-workers. He always considered his fellow officers as part of his family and had many fond memories and a plethora of stories about all of them.

Upon retirement he took up with his second greatest love, fishing. Jerry knew Shasta Lake like the back of his hand and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with other fishermen. He was always ready and available to drop a line or share his best fishing spots with anyone who wanted to know. In addition Jerry was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He loved all that nature had to offer. Jerry enjoyed his retirement and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. The grandkids will really miss their "Papa". Jerry touched many lives and loved his family fiercely. He will be greatly missed by his wife and children.

Services will take place on Saturday, May 12th at 11:00 a.m. at McDonalds Chapels, 1201 Continental Street, Redding, CA 96001. A gathering will be held after the services at the Waltman residence for the family and friends of Jerry. In lieu of flowers donations to your local Veteran's group would be appreciated.

Bronla,
I'm deeply saddened for your loss, and my sympathy and prayers go out to you and your family.
Jerry's contributions to the people and communities he served were great, and his love of the water was unmatched.
Whenever I would see Jerry at the lake we would always talked about the "Big Ones" that lived on Shasta.
Jerry's generosity with his intimate knowledge of Shasta Lake was unbelievable. And our conversations about Shasta will be remembered and cherished forever.
God's Speed Jerry save a "Big One" for me!

Dear Bronla,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. I enjoyed volunteering with him when our girls were at Assumption School. He was also very enjoyable to work with at SLPD. He never gave the dispatchers a problem.

I know this is a very difficult time in your life. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

With deepest sympathy, Kathy Lloyd

As a young female "rookie,", not receiving a lot of love from the older male officers in patrol...your husband, daddy, and granddaddy, gave me a "smile.". He was always kind, and went out of his way to be simply, a "good man.".
When I injured myself during a fight on dog-watch, during the mid-eighties, he called my home and told me what to do to protect myself, get attorney, medical/ surgical costs, everything! I never forgot his kindness to this completely naive officer. He went out if his way to help this officer he barely knew. He was a true "Gentleman," and you are all blessed to have him in your lives.

God Bless you all??

Sincerely,
Sharon Jackson Banks
