John Johnson Obituary

One more WWII veteran gone. Ret. Lt. Colonel John O. Johnson passed away at home at the age of 90.

Upon completion of flight school at the age of 22, John served as a fighter pilot in World War II, being assigned to the VMF-422 corsair squadron and was awarded several air meals for his efforts in the Marshall and Caroline Islands. After the war, he remained a Marine Reserve aviator and retired in 1982. John had a love of flying from an early age and loved flying corsairs and A-4's. His fondest memories and stories revolved around the Marine Corps and flying. Probably the highlight of his life was having the opportunity of flying with Charles Lindbergh.

After the war, John became an optometrist and practiced for over forty years.

John is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou; son, John R. "Bob" (Barbara) Barber; daughter, Nancy (Jack) Davis; step-son, Scot Straits; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren brother in law and sister in law, Roland and Pam Postlewait and sister in law Lynn Donaldson. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Laird Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, John would love to have donations sent to his favorite cause, the Marine Military Academy, 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., Harlingen, TX 78550, www.mma-tx.org.

Services will be held at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo at 11:00 a.m. on March 29, 2013. Reception to follow. Semper Fi John.

I had the honor of knowing Dr.Johnson and had the opportunity to practice with him as an Optometrist. He was always in good spirits and had a true caring spirit. He is truly one of the greatest generation that served our country. May the Lord bless his family and friends
