John Robert "Jack" Young obituary, Redding, CA

John Young Obituary

On Sunday, October 18, 2009, John Robert Young -"Jack" - died at home with his family surrounding him as he passed over. He had a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, but with the loving support of his family was able to remain at home until a stroke ended his life.
Jack served in the United States Navy during WWII and then retired from the Naval Reserves as a Commander after 27 years of service.
Jack was an electrical engineer who helped design the Polaris Missile and the L1011 airplane. For 30 years he worked in the aerospace industry until he and his wife of 63 years, Sarah "Elaine" Young, opened the largest square dance center in the United States. It was called "Elaine's of California" and was located in Granada Hills, CA. They retired from this business in 1991.
Jack and Elaine were innovators in the world of square dancing and round dancing. They will always be remembered by square dancers around the country for providing a wonderful environment for their dancing.
Jack is survived by his wife, Elaine. They were married for 63 years and had three children: Linda Hamilton of Layton, UT; Patricia Bay of Redding, CA; and Douglas Young of Redding, CA. Their spouses, Michael Hamilton, Richard Bay and Mary Puleo all loved Jack as part of a close family. There are eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren (maybe more in the future) that complete this loving family.
Jack was a good husband, a kind and loving father and a man who honored marriage, family, home and country.

A friend recently said, "Long before we're ready, we sadly say goodbye. But there are those in a far more beautiful place who are saying, 'welcome home.'" Last week, Jack went Home.

The "Commander" was my dad for the last 19 years (since the passing of my father). I was not ready to say "goodbye" to my dad, Jack. However, I know he is in a place of Love and Light. I'll miss him greatly. Since his passing, I have felt that familiar and uncomfortable void, yet again.

Even thought the "King" is gone, despite the fact that there will no longer be any "Royal Balls," notwithstanding the reality that we shall no longer share in the company of the "counts, discounts and no-accounts," I will always have the memories and gifts that my dad,Jack, left for me.

God speed, dad!

Your loving son-in-law, the "handsome one."

Grandpa-
I am not sad for the loss that we have endured from your death, but from the memories that I have of how wonderful you are.
I know you are in a better place physically and spiritually. I will see you again when the time is right.
I love you so much.

Several years ago I had the pleasure of working for Jack & Elaine in doing some upgrades to there home when they moved to Redding. Jack was a very pleasant gentleman with a big heart and a source of great inspiration. They became good friends and Jack will be missed by me and my wife. Our hearts go out to Elaine and the rest of his family as he continues his journey.

In our limited associations through the years the most apparent and wonderful characteristic of Jack Young in my eyes was his appreciation and gratitude for his family. This was evident in his support of Elaine's "Elaine's" going way back to the Valley years.

I was blessed to have known him in his better days, before the suffering and changes he went through. We know now he is not suffering, which is a true blessing. Always kind when he had visitors, and always friendly to all. My prayers go out to all the family, as they are very special. I hope the grief of loseing someone so special in your lives is comforted by knowing his suffering is gone. He will be sorely missed. Blessings to you, Jack, as one of the kindest, most intelligent people to grace our lives. Prayers to you, Elaine, as your strength takes you down a new path in life; that you are graced by the presence of your wonderful family and many friends. Diana Brown (Redding, CA)

My heart goes out to you Elaine, Patty and ALL your family. Jack was truly an amazing man, and you will miss him dearly, I know. Just love each other - more than ever - and you will get through this difficult time. Call me any time you like - just to talk - cry - scream - whatever.
My deepest sympathies - Alice Scarbrough

My husband rides with the Patriot Guard and was the one taking photos at the service. When he came home he talked about Jack and said he was a man he would have liked. He was impressed with the life he led and his outlook. I am so sorry for your loss.
