Judith Johnson Obituary

Judith Johnson

Carmel, CA

Judith Ann (Egaas) Johnson passed away in Monterey on the evening of July 12, 2017 surrounded by her family.

Born in 1939 in Camas, WA to Odmund and Dorothy Egaas, Judy was immensely proud of her Norwegian heritage.

She grew up in Redding, CA and attended the College of the Pacific before transferring to UC Berkeley, where she pledged Sigma Kappa. While at Berkeley she met and married her husband, Anthony Johnson, and together they provided a wonderful childhood for their four daughters, Jil (Monterey), Holly (Alameda), Christa (Laguna Beach), and Cara (Ventura).

As a military spouse, she excelled at creating a home wherever the Army sent them, moving 14 times in 30 years. Judy was dedicated to her community wherever they lived, which she demonstrated through volunteering. As a resident of the Monterey Peninsula for 33 years, she worked for several non-profits. She was a Master Gardener, quilter, painter and creative spirit. A childhood friend commented that as a young woman, Judy set the bar high for all as a daughter, best friend, student, wife, and mother. Her nine grandchildren loved her very much and would attest to her wonderful qualities as a grandmother as well.

Judy is survived by her husband of 57 years, Col. Anthony Johnson, Ord C, US Army (Ret), her 4 daughters and their families, her brother, Jon Egaas, and his family, and her tan and white corgi, Taffy.

She will be remembered during the regular 11 a.m. service at the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey on Sunday, July 16. Judy chose to donate her body to UCSF for research, and there will be a private family celebration of her life.

In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting a cause near to your heart in her memory.

Johnson Family,
I am so sorry to hear of sweet Judy's passing. She was the first 'Judy' on campus at the Thomas Allyn School when I got there in 1985, and soon there were three of us. She was such a wonderful person and organized all of us. She hosted a fabulous holiday dinner at your home in the Presidio that year. When I went into labor on June 28th, 1990, I prayed my child would have the same birthday as your mom. I would see Judy and Tony at community events and reminisce about the good times. I know how proud she was of all of you and her grandchildren. Please accept my condolences.
