Margaret Jarman Obituary

Margaret E. (Jones) Jarman

June 27, 1931 - January 13, 2010

Maggie Jarman died peace fully at home in her favorite chair during the early morning of January 13. She went gently into that good night, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Over recent years she had been plagued by health issues, from which she has now been released.

Maggie was the eldest child of Hazel F. and Charles L. Jones. She was born and raised in Redding and, with a few short exceptions, was a life-long resident. She attended Pine Street School and then Shasta High School, where she graduated in 1949. This past summer she attended the 60th reunion of her high school graduating class, and told everyone how much she had enjoyed the gathering.

As a girl, Maggie was the first Rodeo Princess for what was then the Sheriff's Posse Rodeo and Parade. After high school she worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone in Redding. She later worked for several years at the Casa Blanca Motel as a bookkeeper and night manager. She then found a career with Shasta County Social Services, where she worked 21 years until she retired in 1992.

Maggie loved Bingo and Bunco, coffee shops, pro wrestling, and the company of her many friends, some of whom date from their shared Redding childhood. She was a voracious reader, and would read anything with words, from Histories to Romance novels, from newspapers to the backs of shampoo bottles.

She leaves behind her younger sister, Betty Jane (Jones) Dotson of Oregon, her younger brother Richard Jones of Texas; her own children, Robert Quist of Chico, and Tom Matthews, Kelly Scherer and Karen (Jarman) Jerome, all of Redding; her beloved grandchildren Tara Lynn, Ryan, Sarah, Joshua, Angella, John and Sabine; and her four great-grandchildren. We would be remiss if we failed to mention, and offer our deepest appreciation to, Steve Sims, who had been her friend and helper for many years.

A memorial service is planned for 10 AM on Saturday, January 23, at Allen & Dahl's Funeral Chapel, located at 9100 Deschutes Road in Palo Cedro.
