Mark Ratledge Obituary

Mark G. Ratledge
March 2, 1976 - February 29, 2012

Shortly after Mark's birth in Placerville, CA,in 1976, he and his family moved to the Harrison Gulch Ranger Station in Platina, CA. In 1978 his family moved to Redding where Mark spent his childhood. He attended Juniper School, Sequoia Middle School and graduated from Shasta High. After high school he went to work for Wolfgang International where he developed his strong affection for the Volkswagen automobile. As a step forward, Mark accepted a position with America's Tires in Sacramento. He did well there but soon tired of the big city rush and managed a transfer to the Redding tire store.

Once back in Redding he honed his skills at restoring VW beetles, bugs and buses. After his return to Redding, and influenced by his Redding Firefighter friend Don Borden, Mark decided to pursue a career as a firefighter and work toward a degree in Fire Sciences through Shasta College where he also successfully completed the Fire Academy. During this time Mark served as both a volunteer and temporary firefighter with the Redding and Cottonwood Fire Departments and the US Forest Service at Harrison Gulch. He was appointed as Fire Captain with the Cottonwood Fire Department in 2008 and gladly took on the role of Training Officer as safety was one of his highest job priorities.

Mark thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and animals and spent happy times with his constant best friend Tigger who he sadly but happily replaced with Roxie. Along the way he adopted Ben the cat and most recently goats and chickens at his Cottonwood home. In passing Mark leaves behind his one year old daughter Sophia and her mother and his future wife Jennifer Hobbs, Jennifer's children Hannah Jasperse and Conner Hobbs, with whom he had already developed a fatherly bond, and their grandmother Sherry Short and their large extended family. Mark also leaves his mother Maria Closa of Redding along with a large extended maternal family in Barcelona, Spain, to include his 89 year old grandmother with whom he shares a March 2nd birth date; his sister Susana of Stockton, his father and stepmother Jack and Candace Ratledge, grandmother Elizabeth Slater of Redding and the extended Ratledge family in Tennessee. In passing Mark leaves a large family of friends from where ever he was and comrades-in-arms in the firefighting community, all of whom are too numerous to name.

Mark, you are greatly missed here and not a day goes by that I don't think of you and the times we had. It was a priviledge and honor to volunteer under you and then to work with you. I know you are with me on every call I run and feel your presence at night around the station when all is quiet. You will live on at Cottonwood Fire Department forever and everyone misses you. Mark I Love and miss you greatly my brother. Until we meet again Captain "Rat" Ratledge rest in peace my dear good friend.

My dear friend, you are already so very missed. I will never forget our precious time together and our many talks about life, love and everything between. If I had only known your life would be cut short, I would have made sure we had at least a few more BBQ's and chats! You truly were one of a kind. Your heart was so precious and your smile and giggle contagious. T-man will forever see you as one of the best role models/friends he will ever have. You were so good to him!
I know you are looking down with comfort to see the community taking such good care of Jenn and the kids. They are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Until we meet again, We Love You! Rest in Peace Marky Mark. <3

I didn't know Mark, but I felt as though I did, the way the girles at Westside Pet Hospital talked about how nice and great he was. I do know Jennifer and think the world of her and cry for her lose every time I think of her which is quite often. Rest in Peace Mark, your friends and family are looking after Jennifer and the Children. Ann Krumm

My son and I were very fortunate to have known Mark. I watched him grow up, and he watched my son grow up...he was my little brother's best friend and was part of our family. He was truly one of the good ones in this world, and was a friend and little brother for life.

My heart goes to his family, and all of his friends...and his firefighting family, who all lost this rare man.

We love you Mark.

I have never met Mark, nor his family...but when you're helped by one fireman, you are in essence helped by them all. My heart broke with the news of his death, and breaks still for the ones he has left behind. Jennifer, Hannah, Connor, Sophia, Mark's family, the men and women of the Cottonwood Vol, Fire Department, their families..............time does not necessarily heal all wounds, nor should it. But in time you all will find it easier, and less painful to remember Mark. Everyday I think of you, and give you the strength of my prayers.

To a great friend: so sorry we didn't keep in close contact the last ten years, but every time we met up, wether it was on a fire or at the store or at the gas station. You always had a positive attitude and a great big smile that was so infectious. Brother your going to be greatly missed but never forgotten.( I've put your number and name on the back of my helmet in memory of you )

I first met Mark while doing business with the Cottonwood Fire District. He was very competent and likable.
The next time I met Mark is when he and Calvin showed up at 2AM when my house was afire. Not only did he help save my home, Mark re-entered the smoldering building to save my dog. Mark resuscitated the comatose little dog and gave it oxygen. "Chip" the dog is fine. I did thank Mark for his heroism but it never seems enough. He was a fine young man and his loss is a loss to us all. There are no words that can adequately express my condolences to his family. He was a fine man and well loved. God Bless.
