Milton Schultz Obituary

Milton Earl Schultz

Resident of Walnut Creek, CA and

Former Resident of Redding, CA

January 14, 1933 – February 14, 2017

Milton Schultz passed away on Tuesday, February 14, after suffering for several years from Parkinson's disease. Milton lived an active, fulfilling life and touched many people, including those he worked with in the lumber industry, church members, his fellow runners and basketball players, and those who served with him in community service. His family meant a great deal to him, and he never failed to support them in their activities and times of need.

Milton was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on January 14, 1933, graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay in 1950, and earned a bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in 1955. He married Nancy Moorefield in Salem, Oregon, on May 27, 1955. The couple lived in Germany for two years while Milton served as a lieutenant in the army Engineer Corps. They returned to Bend, Oregon, with a five month old baby boy. Three other children, two boys and one girl arrived in quick succession. Milton began his forty-nine year career in the lumber products industry in Bend. He worked at Brooks Scanlon Lumber Company for six years, transferred to Weyerhaeuser for almost four years, and came to Redding in 1965 to work for Paul Bunyan Lumber Company. He served as general manager until 1987, when the mill was sold. He then commuted to Burney where he was manager of Burney Forest Power until his retirement in 2006. Milt always said, "I've got sawdust in my blood."

Milton was an active member in the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Redding, served on the Redding Elementary School Board of Trustees from 1969 to 1981, co-directed the Whiskeytown Relays for ten years, and in 1979, he ran in the Boston Marathon. He was also an active member of the Burney Rotary and later the Redding East Rotary. Before moving to Walnut Creek five years ago, Milt was instrumental in the development of the Paul Bunyan Forest Camp at Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

Milton is survived by his loving wife of almost sixty-two years, Nancy, and four devoted children, Steven Schultz (Angela) of Alamo, James Schultz of San Ramon, Kathryn Norris of Baltimore, and Robert Schultz (Carmen) of Los Angeles. He also is survived by two of his sisters, Helen Schetky and Minalou Byler, both of Salem, Oregon. Milton was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren: Nick Schultz, Andoni Schultz, Amaia Schultz, Ryan Schultz, Elizabeth Schultz, Jack Norris, Jake Schultz and William Schultz. His generous, humorous, and loving spirit will be missed by all who knew him.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Milton's life on Saturday April 8, 1:00 pm, at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Redding. A memorial dedication at Paul Bunyan Forest Camp will follow the service.

I just found this about Milton. I was privileged to work for Milt at Burney Forest Power. He always was a man of class and dignity. His wisdom, leadership, and business sense made my job very satisfying.
Nancy, our hearts are grieved for your loss. Your memories must be beautiful.
May God Bless and comfort you.

Condolences to his family. Worked with him on the the Forest Museum board years ago; a conscientious board member, shared many memories of the lumber industry; a good man.
