Richard, Valerie, Melissa, and Richie,
Richard, near one year ago your family and friends said goodbye to you. Not a day goes by without thinking of you and how life changes in a matter of seconds. Please know you are missed. You always teased me about if I ever caught a Salmon, it would probably cost $3,000 a pound, well, I've caught two this year, and while reeling them in, thought of you and our fishing trips. Brother, I miss you more than words can say and I love you. Valerie, Melissa, and Richie, we know how hard this is and we love you tremendously and are here for you all. Richard would be proud of how you have adjusted and put the best smile you can on everyday.

December 12, 2010

There will be an empty chair at the holiday table this year, but it will be filled with loving memories.

His mother and I loved Richard very much. His passing left a very big hole in our hearts. As his brother Dale was giving his euology during his funeral services I had chest pains. I now know it was not a mild heart attack but my pain was that of a broken heart. We cry often. He is with us in spirit I know, and we talk to him as if he is still standing next to us. We will forever miss his phone calls and his asking, hi dad or mom, whats up? And then go into the subjects of our family, our work, our state, our nations problems, and of course the latest Raiders news. Like he always said there is no "I" in we, ours, or team. He believed it, and lived it everyday.

His mother and I have always been very proud of our Richard. It was wonderful to know how many people loved and respected him as a friend, co-worker, inlaw, brother, son, fafther, and loving husband to Valerie. May you rest in peace son. You will be missed by all, and never forgoten. Son you left one heck of a dash between July 26, 1963 - Nov. 4, 2010. Dale & Betty Patterson. Prattville Alabams.

I sit in my classroom, reflecting on the past 7 years that I have worked with Richard. I miss my daily greeting, "How are you young lady?" I miss my farewell, "Have a good evening kiddo!" And I miss everything in-between, especially the daily banter about his Raiders and my Niners. What I would give to have him hide my 49er treasures once again, or place them out of my reach, or yes, even put them in the garbage can (but he always denied he did that)! Yep, I sit here in a Raider shirt (oh, Richard, you ARE having the last laugh, aren't you!), smiling through the tears. I miss you!

Valerie, Melissa, and Richie, what a wonderful husband and father you had! You are all in my daily prayers. May God provide you with strength, peace, and comfort during this most difficult time.

When someone we love passes away,
We ache, but we go on;
Our dear departed would want us to heal,
After they are gone.
Grief is a normal way to mend
The anguish and pain in our hearts;
We need time to remember and time to mourn,
Before the recovery starts.
Let's draw together to recuperate,
As we go through this period of sorrow;
Let's help each other, with tender care
To find a brighter tomorrow.

Lakeview will not be the same without Richard walking around to bring joy to everyone. Everytime he saw one of our boys in anything other then a Raider jersey he would razz them. He saved us many times when one of our kids forgot their books, he would go out of his way to help us find the teacher to let us into class. Richard will be deeply missed by our family. Thank you Richard for bringing our family such joy in the six years of knowing you. Your family will remain in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Mike, Denise, Connor, Jason, & Cole

School just wont be the same without Richard. We will remember him by his love for his family - his face would light up talking about them.....and his dedication to our school - he was ALWAYS willing to help out. As I watched the big Raider win yesterday, I couldn't help think about him...He will be greatly missed.

Valerie, I have never met you or your children but I know so much about you because Richard talked about you constantly. He talked about your weekends, your school events, just everything was "his family." We would share stories about our kids and he was always so proud of you and the kids. I can't begin to tell you how much Richard touched my life and made me laugh...I never knew in the beginning when he was joking but I learned really fast because he always had that smile. I will miss him so much at Lakeview- who will I leave food for after my cooking classes? He loved when I left stuff for your kids. We will truly miss you Richard. Love, Susan, Bill, Madison and Julia Kakavas

To Richard's Family...
You are truly blessed to have had such a wonderful man in your lives. We were also blessed to have had Richard in our "school family". He was always smiling and joking with everyone. If he didn't tease you at least once a day, you were in trouble!! As for the Raiders...tomorrow I will wear the colors "FOR RICHARD" and in honor of a great man. We will truly miss this amazing man.

Dear Valerie, As soon as my students left for the day, I could hear Richard coming down the hallway. I will miss the anticipation I felt of seeing him walk through my classroom door and hearing a story about the Raiders, or the housing market, or the weather. He was always kind and helpful to me. My prayers are with you and your family. Tamara Barry, Lakeview Elementary School

I am so very sorry to here about Rich. I remember meeting him for the first time and just how comfortable he made me feel. You know how you're around some people that just make you feel awkward and uncomfortable? Rich was the exact opposite of that. It's like he gave you permission to be comfortable in your own skin and I loved that! Apart from that, everyone knows how sweet and funny he was. Valerie, my heart aches for you and the kids.
All my love,
Janice
