Virgil Hutcheson Obituary

Virgil M. Hutcheson, known to his friends and family as Hutch, passed away on November 16, 2010. Born November 30, 1924, in Newberg, OR. Hutch moved to Redding in June of 1959 in order to take his place as the pastor of the Nazarene Church, then located on East Street. Hutch pastored the Nazarene Church for 14 years, from 1959 to 1973. After his time as pastor, Hutch went on to be Minister of Music and director of the Diako youth choir until 1980. During this time Hutch also became an itinerant teacher for the visually handicapped with Shasta County Schools, continuing this work until he retired in 1987 to care for his terminally ill wife. After her death, Hutch remarried in 1989 and moved to Portland, OR until 1997, when he relocated to San Diego, CA. He and his second wife returned to Redding in 2008. Hutch is preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, in 1988 and his son, Randy, in 1973. He is survived by his second wife, Ethel Spaite Hutcheson, son Bob Hutcheson, daughter Becky Lance, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene on North Bechelli Lane, Saturday, November 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. Hutch asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Redding, Nazarene World Missions, or Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Hutch was a spiritual father to so many, many teens. There are no words to express or explain to anyone the affect Hutch and his Diakos had on all of our lives. Eternity was changed in those years and I am so grateful to have been a part of his life. His example in life was that He always propped up Jesus in front of himself, even in times of great grief. He lived a life so entwined with God that it was like a spiritual dance, you couldn't tell where God began and Hutch ended. I pray that all his spiritual children take this time to reflect on his influence, his incredible faith in God and ponder our own lives and faith. Hutch, you've set the bar pretty high, but I pray that we honor you with our own lives, that your legacy lives on for generations and generations. Well done, good and faithful servant.

I have got to say, I cant believe how hard this has hit me. I feel such an emptiness inside at the fact I cant just drop by and see my Papa. Although I truly believe and rejoice that he is with his Father in heaven and so many loved ones who went before him, there is a huge pain in my chest at the loss of such an amazing person. I miss all the trips with him guest pastoring, in which he would always find a Red Lion for Sunday breakfast and I miss just sitting and talking with him. What a wonderful grandpa and great human being. The world has definatly lost one of there best!

I always loved it when we would be at a family dinner and after praying for the meal, still holding hands, we would "shake the love around." I love you and miss you Papa.

We can only say that you will be missed and are so very happy that you will no longer have pain but joy in seeing face to face the Lord you have served so well during life.

Hutch always had the biggest smile! He has blessed our lives, and I know that Heaven is a little brighter because he is there, now. Hugs to Bob, Cheryl, Becky and John and families.

I only met you a few times, when we were preparing for my dad's wedding (Frank and Bea Felch) over 20 years ago but I could tell how warm, compassionate and caring you were. Daddy and Bea always spoke very highly of you, and how much you cared for others. I know you are now at peace with your wife and family in heaven. My condolences to those you left behind here..........

Hutch personified Psalm 91 and the effect of his faith was exponential. He was the real deal, a real man of God, so patient with all of us (esp Cindy and me). I rejoice that he's with the Lord and all my Love goes out to his beautiful family.

My life was changed in those few impressionable teen age years when Hutch directed the Diako choir. His commitment, and loving, caring way. What patience he had. Hutch will always hold a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you Bobby, Cheryl, Becky & families but my heart rejoices in knowing Hutch is singing and smiling with the Lord.

I cannot begin to tell how Hutch touched my life and it was just a few very impressionable teen age years. Those few, high school years involved as a Diako changed my life because of Hutch's commitment, and loving, caring way with a bunch of teens. What patience he had. My heart aches for the family but rejoices because Hutch is with the Lord. He will be sorely missed.

Hutch was a special man to have the patience to work with teens. He even took us on fun trips. I learned so much from him. He will always have a special place in my memory. Thanks Hutch!!

I have known and loved Virgil since I was a small child. My mother was his Sunday School teacher when he was just a two year old, and that was the beginning of a love between the two of them that lasted unti her death in 1999. Heaven has to be a happier place because Virgil is there, because his smile and laugh would light up a room. We will meet again in the presence of Jesus.

This Thanksgiving there is an empty place in our hearts, but at the same time there is an unspeakable joy. This day will be filled with many loving and funny memories and the conviction that we will one day see Hutch again.

Thank you God that Hutch is no longer in pain and finally home. Help us that are left as he will be greatly missed.....Cheryl

Uncle Virg was bigger than life in everyway. His heart literally bubbled over with enthusiasm for everyone and everything. Through my tears, I am smiling to imagine him enjoying the very presence of God.

Hutch will always have a warm place in my heart. He was always gentle, kind, and loving. As a special education teacher he inspired me to also become a special education teacher. He led our Diako group with patience and a love for music. He will be missed.

I remember a yellow VW Bug, summer of 1961, at the Northern Cal Camp Ground. Hutch took me into Santa Cruz twice for pizza and let me drive the bug. Because of his kindness, it was always a pleasure to see him. Someday, I will be part of the family renuion he is enjoying now.
