Carol West Obituary

Carol Smith West Greenville - Carol Smith West, 81, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Cypress Glen Retirement Center. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2 PM at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial of cremated remains will be private in Pinewood Memorial Park. Carol was born in Edgecombe County on December 6, 1942 to the late Arthur and Emily Armstrong Smith. She received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from East Carolina University as well as an Associated Degree in Horticulture from Lenoir Community College. She established Creative Gardens, Inc. in May of 1985. Carol will be fondly remembered for her incredible creativity, horticultural knowledge and beautifully designed gardens. She had a great love of family and enjoyed volunteering for Jarvis United Methodist Church, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and the Pitt County Arboretum. Of special importance to Carol was the opportunities she was afforded in her mission work in Haiti, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and also in Mississippi post Hurricane Katrina. She had a great love for travel and particularly enjoyed her numerous trips with her grandson, Blake. In addition, she enjoyed hiking, sewing, gardening, reading and photography. A loving daughter, mother, grandmother and friend to many, she will be greatly missed by the many who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her brother Marvin Smith as well as her sister-in-law, Judy Smith. She is survived by: Sons, Dean Owen and wife, Katherine, of Greenville and Bruce Owen, Jr. and husband, Jeff Lepis, of Seattle, WA; Grandson, Blake Owen of Greenville; Brother, Arthur Smith and wife, Mary Elizabeth of Cary; Sister, Della Abrams and husband, Wayne, of Cape Carteret; and Sister-in-law, Judy Smith of Wilson. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the kind and loving staff members at Cypress Glen Retirement Center for their nurturing care of Carol. I am so sorry for your loss and very sorry I was out of state during this time.
I continue to pray for you all during this time, that you may feel comfort in knowing that she was very special to all of us at Cypress Glen. I always loved her smile and enjoyed hearing about how she ministered to others.

I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful and loving friend. Carol's memory will always live on through the love she shared with her family and friends. Carol inspired my life by the action she took toward life. Whether volunteering in other countries, working in her garden, or with family and friends, she was a leader in helping all. All my love and prayers to her family and friends.
