Eleanor Branch Hooks

Mrs. Eleanor Branch Hooks died at Vidant Medical Center on Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 2 PM in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service at the mausoleum.

Eleanor was the daughter of the late Jasper and Ida Branch of Ayden, and was the eldest of nine children. Raised in the Littlefield community near Ayden, she graduated from Grifton High School and attended East Carolina College. Eleanor was employed by Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, before becoming co-owner of The House of Hats in downtown Greenville, which she operated for 28 years. She was a longtime and faithful member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

She married Lee Arnold "Pete" Hooks in 1951, who preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sisters, James Ray Branch, Linwood Noah Branch, William Jasper "Jack" Branch, Jr., John David Branch, Geraldine Branch Page, Dorothy Branch Davis and Kenneth Branch.

She is survived by her: son, Michael Arnold Hooks and wife, Ernie; daughter, Rhonda Joyner and husband, Glenn; beloved grandchildren, Adam Joyner, of Raleigh and Leah Joyner, of Saxapahaw, NC; sister, Mary Ida Coltrain; sister in-law, Sue Branch Turnage; brother in-law, Linwood Hooks and wife, Lois; sister in-law, Ann Hooks as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She loved her special friends and neighbors, Louise Congleton, Archie and Jane Smith, and David Hursh.

She also appreciated the loving kindness given to her by caregivers, Judy Carmon and Ada Whitehurst.
