Helen Hawes Obituary

Helen White Hawes WINTERVILLE - Miss Helen White Hawes, 86, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at her residence. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 2 PM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel officiated by Pastor Lennie Furlough. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 PM. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Greenville, Helen was born on June 6, 1938 to the late Dr. James Beebe Hawes and Mrs. Helen White Hawes. She was a graduate of Greenville High School and attended Southern Seminary College in Buena Vista, Virginia. She had been a longtime member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church and was recently attending Christ Hope Church. She was also an active member of the Sans Souci Book Club, which she loved being a part of. Helen will be fondly remembered for her strong faith and love of Jesus Christ and her family. She participated in Community Bible Study for more than 25 years in Greenville and was always involved in her church's Sunday School programs. She was also an avid sports fan and loved following golf. Helen greatly enjoyed the company of others and time at the beach with her sister, Mary French and her family was always a special place in her heart. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Mary French Hawes Evans in 2021 and her brother-in-law Dempsey W. Hodges, Jr. in 2008. She is survived by Nephews, William H. Collier, IV and wife, Debbie, of Raleigh, Chris Collier and wife, Beth, of Washington, Tilden Collier of Morehead City and Dempsey Hodges and wife, Amy, of Raleigh; Great-nephews, Henry Collier, Hawes Collier, Beck Collier, Jack Collier, and Wood Hodges; Great nieces, Mattis Collier, Forbes Collier, Banks Collier, Stewart Hodges and Mary Catherine Hodges. Great-great niece, Eloise "Roo" Collier; Brothers, Jim Hawes and Michael Hawes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Children's Tumor Foundation, Mail Code 6895 PO Box 7247 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19170; North Carolina Autism Society, 505 Oberlin Road, Suite 230, Raleigh, NC 27605 or the charity of one's choice.

I send my sympathy to Helen's family. I attended Community Bible Study with Helen many years. Her love for Jesus and His Word was so evident. She will be missed. May the joy of the Lord bring you all comfort and peace, for she is surely in His presence now.
