Dr. Kevin Straight Good

Dr. Kevin Straight Good, 66, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017, in a tragic accident on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Dr. Good, son of the late Daren Duane Good and Frances Louis Straight of Ohio, was a long-time resident of Greenville, N.C., in Pitt County, where he had a long, successful career as a neurologist. He made a lasting impact on the hearts and lives of the patients whom he treated.
Prior to moving to Greenville in 1987, Dr. Good graduated from Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and attended Hillsdale College on a football scholarship as a running back and Wayne State University. His love for football was something he carried through life and shared with his wife and sons. After college, Dr. Good took a leap of faith by leaving everything he had known to move to the Dominican Republic to attend medical school at Universidad Central del Este. While there, he fell in love with the country, the culture, and its people. It was also there that he met the love of his life and wife of 37 years, Celeste. Upon finishing medical school, Dr. Good returned to the United States with his family to complete his residency at St. John Hospital in Harper Woods, Michigan. He specialized in Neurology and received training at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
After completing his formal education and training, Dr. Good practiced Neurology in Greenville for over 25 years. During his early years in practice he worked with East Carolina University teaching medical students sound neurological exam but also expanding their horizons into Electromyography, diagnostic imaging, interventional imaging, and interventional injection therapies. True to his own nature, he became board certified in these areas as well. He promoted the formation of high quality certified Electromyography laboratories at Pitt County Hospital, East Carolina Neurology, and co-founded the still operating East Carolina University MRI center, all nationally recognized. He mentored and inspired countless students who utilize his teachings and skills on a daily basis. He founded and operated Carolina Neurology & Electromyography, a successful and prominent practice where he practiced until his retirement. After retiring he did not stop. Kevin plowed on like a great football player, blazing new ground and with a new attitude. He trained in Integrative Medicine to help people move beyond our narrow vision diets into healthy, natural eating habits with sound lifestyles. He led a three-part educational series teaching scores of people how to live better and longer. Dr. Good was laying the foundation for the first Integrative Medicine Clinic east of Interstate 95 in North Carolina. Dr. Kevin Good provided sound medical treatment, excellent teaching, and is missed as an energetic friend and colleague in our medical community.
To those that knew him, Dr. Good was a man of many passions. He was an avid musician, long-time surfing enthusiast, expert skier, outdoorsman, cook, and animal lover. He put his heart and soul into everything he did, and above all else he believed that a person should always push himself to learn more, be better, and do his best. While Dr. Good found great joy in immersing himself in his passions and sharing those passions with the world around him, it was his family that brought him the most pride. He was an adoring husband, loving father, and devoted "Gampy" to his three grandchildren. Through his benevolent ways, Dr. Good touched the lives of everyone he met. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
Dr. Good is survived by his wife, Dr. Celeste Good of Greenville; his son, Christopher of New York City; his son, Justin, and his daughter-in-law Jillian and their three children, Tatom, Emerson, and Connor of Raleigh; his sister, Sharman Saffold; and two brothers, Weldon and Lyndon. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Daren Duane Good II.
A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the St. James United Methodist Church and will be presided over by the Revs. Joyce Day and Rhonda Grant Jordan. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon following the service until 3:30 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church. There will also be a celebration of life in his honor in the Dominican Republic in late November.
