Michael Harrington Obituary

Michael "Mike" Harrington
ATLANTIC BEACH - Michael "Mike" Harrington, being a loyal servant of God, went peacefully to his Heavenly Father December 3, 2024, at Carteret Health Care at the age of 72.
Extremely talented in sports throughout high school (earning titles such as all conference and most valuable player in several sports just to name a few) and also known for his many antics (of which there is not room to document here), Mike's agility prevented serious injury many times over. He graduated from J.H. Rose High School and UNC Chapel Hill where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
Although he was an entrepreneur of several businesses, he concentrated mostly on construction. When a problem arose in demolition and rebuilding of a project, his love Kathy (who could see no answer) was always impressed by his problem solving abilities. He would walk away and come back with the perfect working solution.
Kathy called him her "Knight in Shining Amour" almost from the day they met on a blind date. Not only was he blessed with natural athletic ability in sports, Mike was an avid water skier, hunter, scuba diver, body builder, and pilot. He also had serious dance moves. Kathy could not keep up with him, but they danced to their own beat in joyous harmony for over 32 years.
Mike's greatest blessings were his faith and his amazing children. Mike is predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Buddy Harrington; precious daughter, Haley Harrington; brothers, Van and Steve.
Mike is survived by Kathy, his best friend, love of his life, and wife of 28 years. In those years they have spent only a handful of nights apart. He is also survived by his beloved children, daughter, Diana Harrington; sons Lee Harrington and wife Krissy; Josh Harrington; and three grandchildren.
"Hero" is what Mike was to his children. He was a place of safe haven and refuge with his words, calm demeanor and big bear hugs. Mike was known for the smile that never left his face, his courageousness, kindness and acceptance of everyone he met, his mentoring of others and his quiet sense of confidence and calmness that everyone enjoyed and benefitted from. He had many friends who came to visit for porch time and share in his life and he in theirs. He cherished friends who spent time with him, especially in sickness. These moments meant so much to him.
Mike also was a quiet giver - to anyone in need. Mike would help others, mostly anonymously. If someone looked like they needed help with gas or a meal - he would take care of the bill. If a family needed Christmas, food, ac units - he would step up. In lieu of flowers the family asks you to continue Mike's work - by giving to someone in need. As Mike did so quietly during his life, may you continue his generous heart even in his death.
Mike will be officially sent to heaven in a private ceremony and celebration of life. The family invites all who knew this outstanding and kind man to sign the online guestbook, located on Mike's obituary page on Munden Funeral Home's website. We encourage you to share your memories and reflections on what he meant to you. Your contributions will serve as a cherished remembrance of the impact Mike had on the lives of those around him.
And our closing words on Mike for those who came into our home, especially young ones- Mike was sure to offer you a bowl of yucca soup with a side of sandspurs. May the laughter this angel brought to all of us remain forever in our hearts. We will never forget you - your smile, your kindness and your love.
Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.

We were the Harringtons' back-door neighbors from 1968 to '81; our house was on Pinecrest Dr. between them and the Scales, behind their pool. I didn't know Mike super well since he was 5 years older; Steve and I hung out more since we were closer in age. But I remember Mike as being a good guy. I'm just sorry to know that both parents and all 3 brothers are gone now! The years can bring many changes as they come and go.

Being a "greenville" girl, I had many joyful conversations with Mike while I was attending Viquest back years ago. Our families and extended relatives all grew up together and I will always remember that infectious smile. Prayers for all.
