Thomas Jefferson Obituary

Thomas Graham Jefferson

Thomas Graham Jefferson, lover of life, horticulturist, floral designer and accomplished ballroom dancer died Friday, Feb. 6, 2015. Graham, who never met a stranger, was usually the first to extend a hand welcoming all who entered a room. Ladies' man on the dance floor, his card was always full. Big Bands and warehouse dances were the order of the day and the road to Arthur Murray Studio in Raleigh was a weekend destination in the 50's. His curiosity and insatiable zest for life was driven in two speeds: fast and faster. He loved "to go" and never had trouble communicating in any language. His magnetism and gentle smile allowed him special access in travels near and far.

The fourth of five children born to Emma Henrietta Brown and Robert Lang Jefferson, of Fountain, Graham adored brothers RD (deceased), Dawson (deceased), Ray Lang and his beautiful sister Helen Brown (deceased) who called him "Tink." Graham married his main squeeze and dance partner Aileen Flanagan (deceased) in 1948 with whom he had two children Linda "Jef" Glenn and Graham Jefferson Jr. (deceased). He taught them to embrace life with joy, work hard, do the right thing and judge no one. Every day was an opportunity to learn, to explore, to play and eat dessert. He took great pride in his grandchildren Taylor, Michael and Kathryn and was always proud of his son in law Ed Glenn.

Following Aileen's death, Graham spent many happy days surrounded by a loving community of wonderful friends including Martha Abernathy (deceased). The past five years were shared with Marvel DeVane, his ray of sunshine. "She's the reason I'm still alive", he would say. And what a special love they have shared. Our heartfelt appreciation for the Cypress Glen friends and family who made every day a special event.

After serving in the Navy during WWII, he returned to civilian life, attended the American Floral Art School in Chicago and opened Jefferson Florist in 1948. A landscaping and nursery division was added later as a partnership with brother in law Leland Flanagan.

Greenville's civic clubs were front and center during the 50's and 60's for young business men. He enjoyed membership with the Lions, Elks, Moose and Masons.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Brown Chapel at Cypress Glen. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the home of Jef and Ed Glenn and immediately following the service on Monday at Cypress Glen.
