Guy Legate Obituary

Galesburg - Guy E. Legate Jr., 83, 1935 McMasters Ave., died Sunday morning, March 9, 2008, at his home in Galesburg.
He was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Post Oak Township, Johnson County, Mo., to Guy and Pansy Burford Legate. He married Antoinette Rescinito on June 8, 1946, at All Soul's Catholic Church in Abingdon. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Michael (and Nancy) Legate of Abingdon; a daughter, Rebecca (and Mike) Crawford of Galesburg; three grandsons; five great-grandsons; and a sister, Louise (and Paul) Toycen of Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He retired from Gale Products. He volunteered at the VA Clinic in Galesburg.
He joined the U.S. Navy on Oct. 23, 1941, and was discharged on Oct. 26, 1945. While serving in the Navy, he received the American Defense Medal, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign with eight battle stars, European Middle East Medal, Victory Medal WWII, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Commendation Ribbon and Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars. He was on the destroyer U.S.S. Hall, DD 583. He was a life member of VFW Post 2257 in Galesburg and Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon.
He served on the council at New Horizons for six years and also on VNA Board of Trustees for seven years. He volunteered at the Veterans Department of Affairs for eight years. He was of Baptist faith and a member of Allen Park Baptist Church in Galesburg.
Cremation will be accorded. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Abingdon Cemetery. The Rev. Nolan Purtell will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 381 and VFW Post 2257. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
