Harry Smith Obituary

MONMOUTH - Harry D. Smith, 86, Monmouth, died at 12:45 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2008, at Community Care Center of Monmouth.
He was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Hughesville, Mo., the son of Walter L. and Lena (George) Smith. He was raised and educated in Hughesville, Mo. He attended a teaching college in Knob Noster, Mo.
Harry served in the Navy during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He was stationed in Chicago and Watsonville Calif.
Harry married Guadalupe "Lupe" Almaguer on March 3, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth and she survives.
He was a co-owner of the Martin and Clark Co. IHC farm equipment dealership in Monmouth, retiring in 1989 after 44 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, traveling and playing golf.
Harry was a member of the Monmouth Rotary Club, Monmouth Country Club, the 9:30 Coffee Club in Monmouth, Monmouth American Legion Post 136 and the Monmouth Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Lupe Smith of Monmouth; two daughters, Rosa Maria (Peter) Stein of Golden Valley, Minn., and Sylvia Anne (Robb) Miller of Springfield, Ill.; one son, Lawrence (Twila) Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandsons, Jeffrey Stein, Erik Lyons and Larry Smith; two granddaughters, Tzivia Leviton and Susan Dickerson; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Smith of Odessa, Texas; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald Smith and Lawson Smith; and one sister, Mary Ruth.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Immaculate Conception Church, Monmouth, with Monsignor Tom Mack and Deacon Will Clark, followed by military honors. Cremation will follow the service. Friends may call Thursday, July 17, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, where his family will be present 6 to 8 p.m. A wake service will be at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception School or the Monmouth Rotary Club.
