Maurice Tate Obituary

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Rev. Dr. Maurice Tate Sr., 64, Springfield, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at Mercy Hospital.
He was born Feb. 7, 1950, in Gary, Indiana, to Harold and Virginia (Martin) Tate.
Dr. Tate's greatest love was ministering to the community. He was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, liked to cook and sang professionally. He graduated high school in 1967 at Roosevelt High School, received his bachelor's and master's degree at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, and his Ph.D. in education in 1990 from the University of Nebraska. He taught music and African American Studies at MSU. He worked as a diversity counselor, a principal at Father Flanagan High School in Omaha, Nebraska; Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois; Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois; and Illinois State University in Bloomington, Illinois.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Bessie Jelks; one brother, Virgil Tate; and a very close friend, Esther Webster.
Dr. Tate is survived by two sons, Reynaud Tate of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Maurice Tate Jr. of Waukegan, Illinois; two nieces, Lisa and Shalonda Jelks from Gary, Indiana; eight great-grandnieces and nephews; and numerous friends and family.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, in Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Midtown, 1635 N. Benton, Springfield, Missouri. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at Deliverance Temple, 2101 W. Chestnut Express, Springfield, Missouri. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery, 2244 E. Pythian, Springfield, Missouri.
Memorial donations may be made to The Rev. Dr. Maurice Tate Sr. Memorial Fund at The Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte, 4500 S. Lone Pine Ave, Springfield, Missouri.

Wow! I am very saddened by this news. I had no idea, I tried calling Washington Avenue Baptist Church a few years ago and they told me he was released, I had no idea that he had passed. My prayers are with you guys. I loved Pastor Tate, he was my Pastor at W.H.B.C. when I was in school at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri.
