ALPHONSE MISCIKOSKI Obituary

MISCIKOSKI, ALPHONSE JOSEPH Our dear father, Alphonse Joseph Miscikoski, age 89, passed away on November 19,2014 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his wife Barbra (Yorker) of 64 years and his beloved brothers Tony, Jimmy and beautiful sister Genevieve Baena. Al was born in Middletown Ct on March 18, 1925 to John and Janina (Kotarski) Miscikoski and moved to Torrington at a very young age. Al proudly serviced in the Navy in WW 2 on the USS John C. Butler, a Destroyer Escort, which was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for helping turn the Japanese fleet at the Battle of Leyte Gulf (off Samar). In 1951, Al and his older brother Tony opened a hot dog stand in the lot across the street from their boyhood home on Butler Street. They eventually moved it to Migeon Avenue, naming their business Tony’s Drive In, where the two brothers worked side by side for many years. In the 1960’s, Al had enjoyed hosting the Polish Radio Hour on Sunday mornings on WTOR. During that time, he also played his accordian in various polka bands throughout the area. Al is survived by his children Mary Allison of West Cornwall, Robyn (Jay) Pillar of Torrington, Peter Miscikoski and his wife Brianna of Provincetown MA, his grandchildren Grace Gilroy, Devon Gilroy, Samantha Pillar and great granddaughter Shae Pillar along with niece Janice Bado, nephews Mark Miscikoski and John Miscikoski. The family would like to thank the caring nurses and second floor staff at Valerie Manor for their love and kind compassion to Al. Funeral services will be held Monday Nov. 24 at 10:30 at Saint Mary’s Church. Burial will follow at New St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call at Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Monday from 9-10 AM. Memorial Contributions can be made to Veterans of Foreign Affairs. www.phalenfuneral.com.

Mary, Robyn and Peter:

My condolences and deepest sympathy to you and your loved ones. I remember Al as a caring, loving and hard-working father and husband. Many years ago I vividly remember sitting at the kitchen table on Arbour Drive and listening to Boston Red Sox baseball games on the radio. On Saturday afternoons he would drive Pete and I to McDonald's on top of East Main Street. God Bless.

Mary,
Al gave me the start in my life that made all other jobs seem easy! He told me to never stop playing music, that it was a gift to share. I have fond memories of working the night shift with Al...he was a great mentor.Prayers and love to you and your family.

I have very pleasant memories of Al. During the summer of 1951, I worked at Tony's when I was going to UConn. I remember him as Al Maski because of his polkas. A very handsome guy with his blond hair. A real gentleman, and very reserved.

Mary,
I am so sorry for this loss. You have been such a wonderful daughter...your many visits to see your Dad and the many 'treats' that you smuggled in to Valerie that I'm sure he loved and appreciated! May he rest in peace with your Mom!
