Anthony Cannavo Obituary

WINSTED - Anthony J. Cannavo, Sr. 83, of Winsted passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the loving husband of Evelyn (Cruden) Cannavo. "Tony" was born in Winsted on March 20, 1928, the youngest child of the late Antonio and Maria (Coco) Cannavo.
Tony graduated from St. Anthony School and The Gilbert School class of 1945 and was a graduate of UCONN School of Agriculture. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948.
Along with his brother Joseph and sister Sarah he operated Cannavo Gardens for many years. Later he established Cannavo Construction Inc. Which he ran along with his three children Robert, Mark and Donna. He also owned and operated AJ Cannavo and Associates, a Real Estate Brokerage. Both entities are still in operation and Tony, ever eager and enthusiastic, went to the office daily.
Tony served as Winsted's mayor from 1963-1965 and was an active volunteer in the community for over 50 years. He served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Economic Development Commission, Bank Incorporator, NCCC Regional Advisory Board, and was a Trustee of the Gilbert School. The list of Tony's accomplishments are enormous and too numerous to list.
He was recognized for his dedication and commitment at a gala dinner in his honor at Crystal Peak, which was attended by then Gov. Jodi Rell who presented Tony with a proclamation declaring August 16, 2006 "Anthony J. Cannavo Day." In addition he was also recognized by the town of Winchester for his life long community service.
Tony was a true leader; able to listen, advise, and bring disparate parties together for the betterment of the community. He was always there to assist anyone who needed his help or counsel, that's just who Tony was. Although he could have easily retired in his later years, he remained vital, forging ahead with his vision, creative ideas, and indomitable spirit.
Even with all of these achievements and awards, Tony was most proud of his family. He and his siblings were taught the value of education, hard work, service to others and love of God by their exceptional parents, Maria and Antonio. The family commemorated this legacy, by erecting the Antonio Cannavo Spring on Hurlbut Street in Winsted. Tony also cherished his children and grandchildren guiding them with his wisdom and abiding love.
Tony was a true raconteur. He loved to tell jokes and stories of Winsted's past. He enjoyed gardening, vintage cars, UCONN basketball, and running heavy equipment. Most recently he enjoyed his "ROMEO" outings at the Knights of Columbus with his friend John Fratini and brother Joe. He also enjoyed attending the Gilbert Alumni Homecoming with his dear friends Roger Jones and George DeMars.
Tony was adored and loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children, Robert Cannavo and his wife Nancy, Mark Cannavo and his partner Myrna Attella, Donna Bourgoin and her husband Louis and Anthony Cannavo, Jr., all of Winsted; a brother, Joseph Cannavo and his wife Emily of Winsted; a sister, Connie Zaccara of Winsted; step-children, Steve Carpenter and his wife Donna, Brenda Holden, Dawn Hayes and her husband Gary and Gary Carpenter, all of Winsted; grandchildren, Lindsay, Seth, Maria, Justin, Jason, Steve Jr., Michael, Christy, Daniel, Josh, Paul Jr., and Jennifer; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Josephine Malanca, Sarah English and Catherine Nero and a son-in-law, Paul Holden. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Winsted. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at St. Joseph's Church, Winsted at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Winsted with full Military Honors. Friends may call on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to: St. Anthony's School or St. Joseph Church, Winsted. Every once in a while God puts someone here to show the rest of us how a life should be lived and that was Tony. He was devoted to his family and was an outstanding citizen in his community.
We worked with Tony for many years in both well drilling and real estate. He was kind, honest and a man of his word.
Our prayers go out to his wonderful family.
They say heaven is perfect but I am sure Tony will find a way to make it better.
Our Sincere Sympathy

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We never knew Mr. Cannavo personally, however we wish to share a special memory that goes back some thirty years ago. It was during the Christmas season with a knock on our door. Outside stood this kind man with a small potted Christmas tree. He told us it was for our young son Michael. Apparently Mr. Cannavo and Michael had a conversation earlier that day. Michael was quite convincing by telling Mr. Cannavo our family could not afford a Christmas tree. Through the kindness of his heart, Mr. Cannavo brought us a tree. That tree was planted in our back yard and is still standing there. It appears tattered from years of storm's and lack of sunshine, however it remains a wonderful heartfelt sign of kindness from a stranger. Michael passed away nine years ago December 14th. That beautiful Christmas tree, which we call "Michael's tree", is a beautiful part of not only that of Mr. Cannavo's kindness, but that of our precious son. We thank you for giving us this lasting memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the Cannavo family. God bless you Mr. Anthony Cannavo. Your memory will live on in our hearts forever.
