Dear Alberta,
Your mother's friendship was one of the greatest gifts of my life. On a hot day in May in 1991, she sat in the broiling sun on the campus of the University of Hartford to see me receive my masters degree (at 51) and celebrate. Her being there for me on that day meant more than I could tell you -- otherwise, I would have been alone. For nearly twenty years, I saw Florence weekly and spoke with her by phone. Her intellect was astonishing -sitting by the living room bay window, we talked about books, politics, movies, religion, Joseph Campbell, EGYPT, reincarnation, and noticed woodpeckers. She often would call me to read an entry from her journal and say, "Do you know what happened a year ago today? You brought George (now my husband) to meet me." or another reminiscence of something we'd shared together. She seamlessly welcomed me into your family. She made me videotapes of movies and other tv offerings to use in my classroom - or just to enjoy. She was generous and joy to be with. She shared her stories of growing up in Hartford, the depression, your father, Ethel Walker school, the Navy, living in New York, her brother Albert -- and we went to beanhole dinners!
How she loved you! You were her greatest treasure and I know you must miss her. How lucky for you to have such an incredible mother. Your kindness to her in these recent years is a testament to both of you- her love for you and yours for her. May she be reincarnated to a place of peace. - My sincerest wishes for peace and comfort for you and your family. How I miss her! - Betsy Selfo

Alberta, I am so sorry to read of your mom's passing. She was my mom's (Frances Morse) roommate at Haven almost 11 years ago. I remember you, your mom and your brother. May you find comfort in knowing you were a good daughter.
