James Cattey Obituary

James Cattey, 51, of Torrington, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Toth) Cattey. They shared a deep love and were each other's best friend. James was born in Torrington, on March 25, 1961, the son of Gloria (Arnott) Alciati and the late Joseph Cattey and the late Joseph Alciati. He was both an extremely talented musician and chef by trade. He was a graduate of the DiBacco School of Arts in Lake Worth, Florida, and the Connecticut Culinary Institute. James worked in various restaurants in both Litchfield and Hartford counties over the course of his career. He also catered many special events including weddings. The wedding cakes he created were pieces of art.
But nothing compared to his music. James was born with music in his soul. He was a gifted musician and music producer. He could play anything on both the guitar and keyboards. All James had to do was hear the song one time, and he could reproduce it. He made his living in his early twenties by playing in his professional band, Thrasher, traveling and opening for many famous bands. He was later part of the local band, Factor 5, who were in the midst of preparing for a mini reunion. James loved to cook for his family and was teaching his youngest son the tricks of the trade, preparing him for a career in the culinary arts. His wife and two sons were everything to him. They enjoyed being together more than anything. It did not matter what they were doing as long as they were doing it together.
In addition to his wife and mother, James leaves his two amazing sons, Nicholas James Cattey, 21, and Michael Liam Cattey, 14, both of Torrington. He also leaves two brothers, Robert Cattey of Shokan, New York and Joseph (Jay) Cattey of West Palm Beach, Florida, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family and an amazing circle of wonderful friends. And last, but not least, his beloved dog Basil, who was his faithful and loyal companion.
Funeral services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 342 Prospect Street in Torrington at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16. Friends may call Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Avenue, Torrington.
