LEO THOMSEN Obituary

THOMSEN, LEO K. Winsted – Leo K. Thomsen, 90, of Winsted, CT., died on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at his home in Winsted, surrounded by his family. Born on November 6, 1925 in Barkhamsted, CT., Mr. Thomsen was the son of Kaj Einar and Elna (Jespersen) Thomsen. Mr. Thomsen attended The Gilbert School in Winsted.From 1943 - 1945, he served as a combat marine in the United States Marine Corp., earning several stars for his participation in battles in the South Pacific during WWII. Upon his discharge, Mr. Thomsen graduated from the Commercial Trades Institute of Chicago as a diesel mechanic. He worked at the Hudson Wire Company for 23 years and Sears & Roebuck Company for 20 years. In March 1949, he married Norma Burke of Riverton, CT. In March, they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, Marine Corp Devil Dogs, and the Elks Club. He enjoyed camping with family and friends, was an active member of area bowling leagues and the senior golf league. Mr. Thomsen was recognized for donating 21 gallons of blood over his lifetime to save lives. Mr. Thomsen is survived by his wife, Norma (Burke) Thomsen of Winsted, CT., a son, Lee Thomsen and his partner, Charlene LaVoie, of Winsted, a daughter, Linda Thomsen of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and a sister, Carol Campetti of New Boston, MA. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Seth Einar Thomsen of Winsted, Eryn Plata and her husband Ricardo of California, Trevor Breig and his wife Andrea of New Hamphsire, Haley McMahon and her husband Ben of New Hampshire, Kory Breig of New Hampshire and Charity Price of Florida. Mr. Thomsen is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his youngest son, Bruce Einar Thomsen in 1978; and his siblings, Selma Parsons, Agnes English, and Carl Thomsen. Friends may call on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 12 PM – 1 PM with a funeral service at 1 PM. Burial will follow at Forest View Cemetery, Winsted with full Military Honors. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Marine Corp Heritage Foundation or to your favorite charity.
