Danielle Robbins Obituary

Danielle Robbins, 33, ended her life-long struggle with depression on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Danielle was born in Greensboro, NC to Charles and Mary Ann. Danielle will be missed by numerous friends in Oregon, parents Mary Ann Kirkman & Charles & Lucy Robbins of North Carolina. Danielle's beloved canine companion of thirteen years, Alder, died just one month earlier on Jan. 10.

Danielle left home at 17 to travel & tour with the Grateful Dead. In 1993 she settled in Eugene, Oregon. She enrolled at Lane Community College to earn her High School Equivalency & continued her education earning a B.S in Environmental Science in 1999 from the University of Oregon. During this time Danielle worked at the Bread Stop. In 2000, she moved to Corvallis to begin pursuit of an M.S. in Forest Ecology and Management from Oregon State University, received in 2004.

Danielle was deeply in love with the wild places of the West. She spent much of her free time enjoying them and focused her work on understanding, caring for and preserving them. The Earth has lost a fierce advocate and genuine friend.

A gathering in remembrance of Danielle's life will be held Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, 3 p.m. at Peavy Lodge, Peavy Arboretum, Corvallis.

In lieu of flowers, Danielle's friend's and family request support of native plant conservation efforts. Opportunity to make a contribution to local efforts will be available Sunday.

Danrz,
My time at Oregon State University was time spent with you. You dragging me out of my house to get to Alsea Falls before I was even awake, always getting me outside doing the things you loved so much. Who else would swim with me in the Willamette River? I love you and now I also love your friends and family that you have brought into my life. You are deeply missed and deeply loved, Danielle. May you rest in Peace.
Forever,
Angela

Years ago when I lived in Eugene I was fortunate to meet Danielle. We took a number of walks and hikes with our young dogs and Alder when they were all puppies. One memory I have was relaxing on top of Mt. Pisgah on a sunny afternoon watching the dogs playing. That is how I will always remember her.

"One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds. Much of the damage inflicted on land is quite invisible to laymen. An ecologist must either harden his shell and make believe that the consequences of science are none of his business, or he must be the doctor who sees the marks of death in a community that believes itself well and does not want to be told otherwise." -Aldo Leopold, Round River, 1953

I believe that Danielle was one of the doctors, and I know just the thought of her vibrant, outspoken, honest character and love for nature will always brighten my days and serve to heal my heart.

Dannielle was one of the first people Lori and I met in Corvallis. She informed me of the dangers of the many yellowjacket nests of the disc golf course, immediately after I had been stung. Weeks later, we remet and remembered that chance meeting at the top of the Crowbar. We are all poorer for her absence.

I can only hope you are free of the suffering that is this existence. You have left me thankful for the brief time that you graced me with your presence.

I'm so sad to hear the news. She was always a fighter, tough and stubborn. I pray her soul can rest in peace.
