Dear Trudy,
Our family is so sorry to hear of Dave's sudden passing. I'm Ron Kelsos' little sister Kathy and I remember Dave and Ron and all their buddies. My brother thought the world of Dave. "Best friend any person could have." He did kindness for all our family in one way or another. My mom was the lady that Dave said (jokingly) "contributed to all the acne in Springfield" with her Toll House Cookies. For some legal work he did for our parents he would only take some baked toll house cookies!! What a guy! He wont be forgotten! They don't make guys like him anymore. Love to you and your family

As a young Lane County Deputy District Attorney, I came to know Dave. My respect for Dave's integrity and ability was why he represented our daughter, Julie, when she was 7 years old and ran over while waiting for the school bus. Today, Julie and her 7-year old son, Noah, attended Dave's memorial service. Noah will always know what Dave did for his mother. In the 80s, when our 17-year old son was suffering from an illness, David called and convinced my wife to buy him a puppy, Sky, which brought him years of happiness. Years later, David was my lawyer when I worked for the district attorney's office and faced discipline he believed unjust. He refused payment from a friend.
As a federal prosecutor for 29 years, I sought Dave's advice on high profile cases. I wrote in my journal several of his memorable statements including "present the "cold hard facts with hard edges" and "cut the case down to the bone, muscle and shank." Most memorable, "No foolin' yourself what you've done or haven't done."
A prosecutor for 43 years, I never met one better than Logan.
I was honored to speak along with Springfield Police officers and defense attorneys against the foolish counsel decision to replace him as the Springfield City prosecutor. Unsurprisingly, Dave never asked me to do anything for himself, but would ask the "feds" to help right wrongs against victims who had come to him.
And, no one ever got me as drunk as Logan when we were celebrating a success.
Our last conversation was at Trudy's restaurant. The main course was family, politics, the law, crude humor and a side dish of storytelling. But the dessert was his talking about his wonderful wife. How can one not love and respect a man such as Dave. I was honored to know him and will miss him.

A man not replicated in our experience. Dave's influence on so many people was not understood until his celebration of life. The sheer numbers, the generational differences, men, women, old, young, no matter your political viewpoint, Dave made you a better person by your experiencing him. Learned, legal, loved, laughing, you have been lucky to have met, or known him.
He's telling God a great story right now, I look forward to hearing them again someday.

I met Dave in 1973, after I returned to Eugene after the Marine Corps. Someone matched us up for tennis, and we played often. He was very good, and very willing to help me improve. We also shared many fly fishing stories over the years, usually focusing on steelhead. Dave practiced criminal law while I practiced civil litigation, so we were never in court together. But I knew Dave's stellar reputation from many who had cases with Dave. He was prepared, professional, and understood his job was greater than hammering every defendant. Finally, all will miss Dave's sense of humor. Gone are the days we will talk at The Pump, but his memories will remain.
