I was not a good student at South, so I´ve sort of erased all memories of my classes. But Mr. DeWitt´s class where we read Walden is etched indelibly on my brain and in my heart. I later visited Walden Pond and even got a Master´s in English! He definitely made an impression on my life.

Just found Don´s beautiful message to me written in my autograph book. We used to have those things. He was a magnificent writer. Thank you Don for seeing my Green Light! My Affirming light when I was so young at 17. It gave me confidence to do what I did next.

Mr. DeWitt fostered a love of literature and writing that exists to this day and I loved every minute of his class. He was inspiriing, patient and supportive and willing to help, even when it didn't include school subjects. I will always be grateful for the time in Outdoor Club when he lead me down Mt. Hardesty when I tore my meniscus. I hope his famiy knows what a difference he made in many students and peoples lives. He will be missed!

Don was a wonderful teacher. One my three favorite. Caring, thoughtful, and educational. I still recall some of his lectures like they were yesterday. Took my favorite English class from him. He helped me learn to love literature. I am fortunate to be one of the many students he touched.
My condolences to his family. His legacy lives strong among us.

Don changed my life. Encouraged me to get my GED. Challenged me to to read and become more than the labels my family gave me. He mentored my writing efforts and gave me a life long love of literature. He had strong values and a big heart. I will dearly miss him

Don Dewitt was my favourite teacher EVER. He literally saved my life in a drug overdose and always encouraged my writing. Even after graduation I would go and visit him on campus on occasion. Rest well. You were much loved.

I was so saddened to hear about Don's passing. I have so many fond memories ranging from overnights with Beth (Elizabeth) where Linda and Don would put up with our Witney Houston Dance Parties and baking in the kitchen (4th-5th grade) :) to seeing him pass our house on a weekly long run. Don always had a 1000 watt smile. He will be missed and
remembered for his gentle heart and kindness. Big Hugs, Sara Matteri

Mr. DeWitt was my English teacher in 1970 and 1971. He was a great teacher and made learning fun. My love of reading came from his class and has continued to this day. He was a great help through a difficult season of my life. I'm so sad to hear of his passing.

Mr. DeWitt's Major American Writers class was one of my favorites at South Eugene High School. He helped train us in the art of close reading, unlocking the richness of literature.
