Edward Wilson Obituary

Edward Francis Wilson III passed away on August 28, 2018.

Ed is survived by his wife Marion (nee Park), his brother Terrence (Daphne Raitt), his three daughters, Catharine (David Patton), Christine (Brett Rubin), and Casey (Jody Bramel), and three grandchildren, Veronica Crow, Saul Bramel, and Ellen Bramel.

Ed was born in 1934 in Springfield, Ohio to Helen (Malone), an educator, and Edward F. Wilson II, a professional baseball player and educator. He spent his childhood in Tarrytown, New York, where he graduated from Hackley School. Ed began his undergraduate studies as a two-sport scholarship athlete at Cornell University before serving two year in the Army during the Korean War. After the war, Ed returned to college at the University of Pennsylvania, before completing his M.D. at The Yale University School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD and spent a fellowship year at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, NY. During his medical career, Ed worked as a forensic pathologist in the Medical Examiner's office for the city of Baltimore, the state of Utah, Lane County (Oregon), the state of Oregon, and Delaware County (Pennsylvania). He also served as a clinical pathologist and partner with Pathology Consultants in Eugene, Oregon for many years.

Ed had a great love of international travel and culture, as well as a passion for outdoor adventure. In the early 80s, he spent six months in Peshawar, Pakistan with the International Medical Corp, then in the late 80s he spent a year in Abha, Saudi Arabia as faculty at the King Saud University College of Medicine. Ed's outdoor travels, often undertaken with Marion, as well as his children and friends, included canoeing, river rafting, and backpacking. Among his numerous trips, he canoed and camped with his family on the Okefenokee Swamp, rafted on many rivers in the Northwest, trekked in the Himalayas with the assistance of a Sherpa guide, and backpacked in Alaska, Canada, the Alps, Patagonia, and the Dolomites.

Most of all, Ed loved his family. He and Marion were married for 56 years. They never tired of spending time together traveling, in the outdoors, attending the symphony, theater, and opera, and being with their children and grandchildren. Ed was a family man and a person who enjoyed meeting and learning from people in all walks of life and of all backgrounds. He was a good listener, and shared a mutual respect for those who worked with him and for him. His family will remember him as a good husband, loving father and grandfather, and as a person who continued to question, and grow, and learn throughout his whole life.

Special thanks to the Visiting Angels caregivers and to Peace Health Hospice of Scared Heart.

Your biggest dream was to play major league baseball. The first thing you did every day during the baseball season was open the sports page to see how Stan The Man Musial did. In the Army , as a trained combat medic you hitched hiked up ( saved the money the Army gave you for the trip ) to Seattle, Washington to get the troop ship to Korea. On the way you stopped in Oregon to see Carson Bigsbee, an Oregon Duck player that you had known. Not sure how you knew him. You told Carson that about you interest in playing professional baseball. Your comment has been burned into my soul. You said Carson looked you right in the eye, and said directly “ Eddie you ate too old, you are 20-21, yiu need to be 17-18 playing minor league ball now. You were absolutely shocked. Pro baseball lost a fine teammate but the medical world got a great man. Love you, your little brother Terry

The kind words here mean so much to me. I try everyday to emulate my father- to treat all with kindness and respect, to put family above all, to be a teacher and a mentor, but also a learner and a person who grew through the sharing of experiences and from hearing other people´s stories. Thank you too all who cared about him. Share your stories and thank people for the gift of sharing theirs. We have some much to learn from each other.

Two of my fondest memories are meeting Casey while she was attending the University of Massachusetts and hosting "The cold oatmeal" radio program in fall of 1988. The second memory is visiting him and Marion in Eugene in early 2005 Touring the area, Particularly where the film Animal House was filmed. John Belushi had been an acquaintance of my family.

A Life Worth Living
Doctor Edward F. Wilson was a man
born between the wars of the 20th Century.
He became a fierce contender for freedom with dignity nonetheless.
As an amateur athlete, prodigious,
As a soldier briefly,
he found the path to become a physician,
a pathologist counting our afflictions,
a medical examiner enumerating our wounds,
out of which he made this local place his home,
from which he became a traveler of the world,
always building his craft as he went,
a solo traveler of rivers and mountains,
he made room to take his family with him as he went,
a learned man, who never stopped learning,
he could not help but teach anyone who was near him.
He did not seek to be noticed,
but could not help that a sea of people
aspire to live like he did.
