Gerald Johnson Obituary
Gerald Johnson died April 24, 2016 of cancer surrounded by loving members of his family. He was 89 years old.
Gerald was born and raised in England. During his youth he worked summer stints on the estate of the Duke of Buccleuch in Scotland and with the Forestry Commission in Northumberland; through these jobs he gained his love of forestry.
Gerald had served as an officer in the regiment of motorized infantry The Kings Royal Rifle Corps of the British Army in 1945. During this time, he was stationed in Palestine and Tripoli.
He attended Oxford University and obtained his degree in Forestry. It was at a gathering there he met a beautiful American, Gloria who was on a Fulbright scholarship. They married in London and lived in England for two years before moving to America.
Gerald worked at the Bureau of Land Management in Eugene, Oregon from 1956 to 1987 where he was a forester and then a supervisor of Timber Sales. He was renowned for providing outstanding job performances and leadership.
His career choice in life was a perfect fit for his love of the outdoors. He also enjoyed duck hunting, dog training and always a good athletic competition. His greatest love was for his family. Gerald was predeceased by his wife Gloria and son Peter.
He leaves his daughter Frances Anderson and son-in-law Bart of Seattle, his son David and daughter-in-law Kimber of Seattle, his daughter Cecilia Lively and son-in-law John of Gig Harbor; grandchildren Andrew Johnson, Haley and Julia Anderson, Casie, Ben and Dan Lively.
He was a loyal and devoted husband for over 60 years to his wife Gloria. He was a charming, funny and extremely quick-witted father and friend who said that the secret to staying young was to forget you're too old to enjoy it.
There will be a memorial service at 3 o'clock, June 25, 2016 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 4110 River Road in Eugene.
