Jack Shapiro Obituary

Jack was born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn in 1914. He completed the 8th grade and then attended Pressman's school and learned to be a printer. He married Sylvia in 1941 (she saw him on the beach 5 years earlier and said "that's the man I am going to marry", she was right and they were married for 70 1/2 years). During WWII, he first served the war effort as a welder in the Brooklyn Navy Shipyard. Then he joined the Navy and served on Whidbey Island as a Petty Officer in Ordinance. After the war he worked as a printer in New York City 'til he retired in 1980.

He and Sylvia moved to Eugene in 1988. Jack & Sylvia enjoyed going to the Kaufman and Campbell Centers and the Senior Brunches at the Temple. He passed away at his son's house with his family around him on Thanksgiving morning.

Jack is survived by his wife, Sylvia, son Ira, and daughter Phyllis. He has five grandchildren: Simon, Jed, Paul, Erik and Ana. He will be missed. The family will have a private gathering.
