John Cruickshank Obituary
Cruickshank
1934 - 2017
John Joseph Cruickshank passed away on March 14, 2017 with his family at his side. Prior to his illness with dementia he liked to ski, fly fish, hike, golf, take photos, camp, and in his last months he loved to watch golf.
He loved to visit Central Oregon where he grew up and maintained a second home. Some of his favorite National Parks to visit were Crater Lake, Yellowstone, Glacier, and Yosemite. He spent many hours touring the Oregon High Desert Museum and insisted on taking out of town visitors there.
Throughout high school and college he worked at the Shevlin Hixon mill and at his family's business, City Drug. He retired from Lane County Health Department in 1995 after 28 years, prior to that he taught science in LaGrande and Salem.
John attended Kenwood Elementary school, graduated from Bend High School and received a top state science award. He graduated in Science from Oregon State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
He met his wife in Bend while she was teaching at his elementary school years after his attendance. They waited until after the ski season to get married because they didn't want to miss a day on the slopes.
John was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Jr. and his parents Kenneth Sr. and Elsie. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter, Betsy (Tom) and granddaughters Katie and Annie.
A brief remembrance gathering will be held at Pilot Butte Cemetery at 11:00 AM March 24th. Contributions can be made to Oregon High Desert Museum or Pearl Buck Center.
