John was not only my skating teacher in Alamogordo, but was my mentor and role model. I could not afford private skating lessons, so John gave me a weekly job caring for his yard and shrubs in exchange for private skating lessons. John was one of less than a handful of men who shaped me into the man I have become. Next to my dad, he was the most caring and supportive man who not only taught me how to skate at a competitive level, but who set the example...stood up for what was right....demonstrated how a true believer could change peoples lives...and what it took to be a friend and listener. I had the privilege of going with John and his family to Eugene in the summer of 1966. I lived with them...worked with them on the old rundown skating rink...worshipped and prayed with them and was treated like family. As a soon to be senior in high school, I ate them out of house and home...especially all the ice cream! I loved John as a second father but time passed and lost contact. I was devastated not only to lean about losing the skating rink but of his death. I think of John often and thank God for the time I did have with him. May God bless you and keep you...until we meet again.

Dear Aileen and family,
We were saddened to learn of John's passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you at this time.
We remember John in many special ways through our years at Willamette Christian Center-being a Royal Rangers Leader is just one of them.
May the Lord's peace and comfort be near each of you now and always.
Love,
Mike and Sandy Mitchell
