John Montgomery Obituary

John William Montgomery

October 25, 1928 -

December 11, 2013

Husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, John was born to Mary and Milton Montgomery in Cheyenne, Wyoming and grew up there as a child. John served in the Army and was sent to Korea in 1953.

In the late 40s and early 50s, John skated professionally with the Vanities where he traveled in parts of the U.S. and Cuba. He also produced skating shows in Greeley, Colorado and Alamogordo, New Mexico.

He married Aileen Sehnert in 1957. They lived in Cheyenne, had two children and then moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico where he worked on government contracts that had to do with the moon landing. He moved the family to Eugene, OR in 1966 to pursue a life-long dream of having his own Roller-Skating Rink. John was to purchase an old run down skating rink but, it soon became evident that that was not to be. Instead life led him to the insurance business where he worked with Mutual of New York for over 20 years. He obtained his Certified Life Underwriters license and became a leading sales manager and earned many top company awards.

John was very active with Willamette Christian Center where he taught Sunday School and a Single Adult class. He served in many other capacities. He also was President of Gideon's and spent several years in the distributions of Bibles.

After retiring, John worked for his son-in-law, Wade Stevens, doing technical drawing for metal buildings until his wife coerced him into doing extensive traveling and seeing many "wonders of the world".

John enjoyed coin collecting, manicuring his yard, bowling and spending time with his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Aileen; son, Sam Montgomery; and daughter-in-law, Eileen; and granddaughter, Charly of San Diego, CA; his daughter, Shari Stevens; and son-in-law, Wade; and granddaughter, Courtney, of Pleasant Hill. He also has a brother, Robert, of Kingman, AZ.

Miss my skating teacher, mentor and friend.

John was not only my skating teacher in Alamogordo, but was my mentor and role model. I could not afford private skating lessons, so John gave me a weekly job caring for his yard and shrubs in exchange for private skating lessons. John was one of less than a handful of men who shaped me into the man I have become. Next to my dad, he was the most caring and supportive man who not only taught me how to skate at a competitive level, but who set the example...stood up for what was right....demonstrated how a true believer could change peoples lives...and what it took to be a friend and listener. I had the privilege of going with John and his family to Eugene in the summer of 1966. I lived with them...worked with them on the old rundown skating rink...worshipped and prayed with them and was treated like family. As a soon to be senior in high school, I ate them out of house and home...especially all the ice cream! I loved John as a second father but time passed and lost contact. I was devastated not only to lean about losing the skating rink but of his death. I think of John often and thank God for the time I did have with him. May God bless you and keep you...until we meet again.

Dear Aileen and family,

We were saddened to learn of John's passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you at this time.

We remember John in many special ways through our years at Willamette Christian Center-being a Royal Rangers Leader is just one of them.

May the Lord's peace and comfort be near each of you now and always.
Love,
Mike and Sandy Mitchell
