Marian Frank Obituary

Marian Hawke

Burton Frank

1922 - 2010

Marian Hawke Burton Frank died April 12th at age 87. She was born December 23, 1922 in Bristol, PA to Russell and Marian Burton. From childhood, she was very athletic, swimming across the Delaware, winning roller-skating competitions and serving as captain of her school field hockey and basketball teams.

Marian attended George School, a Quaker boarding school for five years, then went on to attend Wellesley College for two years, transferring to Earlham College from which she graduated in 1945 with a degree in Biology, and a minor in Physical Education. She followed her soon-to-be husband, Peter Frank, to Chicago where she worked in the biology lab of Dr. Thomas Park at the University of Chicago. Upon completion of Peter's PhD, the couple moved to Connecticut, then Missouri and eventually settled in Eugene, OR with their family.

Marian was a strong anti-nuclear, alternative energy advocate and served on the Energy Facility council for many years. She was also involved in the League of Women Voters, advocating for women's rights. Strong-willed and spirited, she never hesitated to say what she thought. Her support for the arts and environmental causes included American Friends' Service Committee, CARE, Nature Conservancy and many local theatre and art organizations.

An avid golfer and tennis player, she loved being active and spending time with friends. One could often find her out and about enjoying a golf game, fishing, ice cream sundaes or some other adventure with those she cared about. Her love of singing and dance will be remembered by all who knew her, especially her wonderful habit of spontaneously breaking into song. She was passionate about her beliefs and her life, and didn't back down, even when faced with a hungry bear in Yellowstone on her honeymoon. Yep, it was the bear that ran away.

Marian will be missed by many, especially her children Liz, Russell and Richard as well as five grandchildren, four great-grandsons and her cat Fuzzy. Please sign the guest book at www.registerguard.com/legacy

Marian was one of friends! I also was her caregiver for sometime.
I took her swimming, bowling, out to lunch or pie and she loved to go to the book stores.
We had such a great time!
Marion was a funny lady. She was a lot of fun!
We spent our times together, talking about her childhood.
And singing many songs together!
Marion was a very Special Friend!
My heart goes out to her daughter; Liz and all the family!
She will be deeply missed but her wonderful life, laughter and singing will not be forgotten!

Marian was one of my first friends when I moved to Oregon from Ohio in 1983. She helped teach me how to golf & I enjoyed many fine outings with her and our other pals. Some of the fondest memories with her were our yearly weeklong golf trips to Black Butte Ranch.
She will be missed but never forgotten!
