Patrick Fitzmaurice Obituary

December 11, 1955 -
August 26, 2018

Patrick John Joseph Fitzmaurice III, "Fitz", died August 26, 2018 at home. He was born in Chicago, Dec. 11, 1955, to Barbara E. and Patrick John Fitzmaurice Jr. Fitz grew up in Janesville, Wisconsin and studied Conservation, Forestry and Wildlife at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. Summers spent at his Grandparent's summer home in Marquette, Michigan fueled his interest in forestry which brought him West to Oregon after college. He had a lifelong passion for gardening and he cultivated amazing public and private garden spaces.

Fitz served Eugene's Hult Center for Performing Arts and its patrons for nearly 34 years in their Food and Beverage Department and he treasured the friendships made over those years.

Fitz was loved for his wicked sense of humor and hilarious one-liners, his smile and belly laugh and his deep appreciation for life and all of the beauty in it. He was generous and kind and loved to share his garden bounty, whether it be late season dahlias, holiday wreaths or flowers for a family or staff wedding. He loved a good rock-n-roll night, all animals and a good cup of coffee. He gave amazing hugs and never missed an opportunity to tell you that he loved you.

Fitz left behind his partner David Cothern, sisters Barb (Art) Knilans and Maggie (John) Hornbostel, brother James (Jeanine) Fitzmaurice, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends and work colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Jeanine Fitzmaurice. Fitz left his beloved dog Luna to take care of David and vice versa. He will be greatly missed.

His life will be celebrated on Sept. 18th, 7-9 pm at The Hult Center Studio. Fitz loved flowers, and they would be welcome or a contribution in his name to the HIV Alliance would be appreciated.

"Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day; Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed, and very dear." You are in my heart Fitz.

I will miss your welcoming smile and great laugh every time I visit the Hult. Glad I saw you not too long ago, long time friend of 30 years.

Fitz, you were one of my favorite Cultural Services connections, a cynical sanity in occasional chaos, a swift and deadly witticist. Go in beauty, Brother.
