JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – Thomas Gordon Benton, 67, formerly of Fairhaven, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Thomas was born Nov. 1, 1948, in Hamilton, to Dick and Beulah Benton. He served in the United States Marine Corps from July 1967-1969 where he held the rank of corporal. Thomas was last stationed at Command-7th Engineers in San Francisco, serving during the Vietnam War, and earned a Purple Heart. He later served in the United States Navy from November 1973-March 1987, holding the rank EACS – Senior Chief Petty Officer. Throughout his military career, Thomas earned numerous ribbons and medals and he was an Expeditionary Warfare Specialist. At the time of his death, he was employed at the NAV FAQ in Jacksonville, Florida. Thomas was looking forward to retiring in February of 2016, and spending time fishing, camping, and traveling with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Lisa Benton; two daughters, Debbie (Mike) Blackstone of Somerset, Kentucky and Angela Young of Jacksonville, Florida; son, Thomas Benton of Jacksonville, Florida; four grandchildren, Megan (Josh) Turner and Amber Still, both of Kentucky and Logan Young and Olivia Young, both of Florida; one great-grandchild, Arora Mitchel of Kentucky; brother, Dick (Donna) Benton of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Sandra Borradaile of Greenville, Beverly (Fred) Campbell of Freeport, Pennsylvania, and Carol Benton of Fairhaven and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Linda Peters of West Palm Beach, Florida.
