Kenneth Jurkofsky Obituary

Kenneth W. Jurkofsky passed away peacefully at his Loveland home on July 8, 2017. He was born in East Los Angeles, California on August 4, 1943 to Emil and Catherine Jurkofsky. He married Martha (Martie) Hanson in Loveland on April 22, 1972. Their son, Drew, was born in Loveland in 1976. As a child growing up in Southern California, Ken had special memories of eating watermelon in Griffith Park, fishing at Green Valley Lake and shooting at a family ranch in Fallbrook. During his teenage years, Ken learned to play and excelled at bowling. He owned two perfect bowling games by throwing 12 strikes in a row - once when he was seventeen and again two years later. Shortly thereafter, he rolled two "700" series in the same night. Ken seriously considered turning pro, but an invitation to join the armed services quickly changed his path. He joined the United States Marine Corps in September of 1961 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, Okinawa, Japan and Danang, Vietnam. After his tour of duty, Ken made his way to Colorado where he found his dream job as a police officer for the Loveland Police Department. He proudly served the citizens of Loveland for 36 years believing everyone deserved respect, the opportunity of a second chance and the benefit of the doubt. Ken spent much of his time as a Crime Prevention Officer and worked tirelessly with senior citizens to prevent them from becoming victims of crime while giving them a voice in various community groups. He served on the Larimer County Triad Association, Larimer County Adult Protection Team and Loveland Senior Advisory Board. Ken was at his best when he worked with children. He was affectionately known as Ken "The Cop" to many of Loveland's kids. He founded and organized Loveland Police Department's annual Fishing Derby for 21 years and gave kids an opportunity to spend time together with their families and learn about a sport he loved. He was an advisor for the Loveland Police Explorer program and played the roles of Officer Friendly and McGruff the Crime Dog for community presentations. During his retirement, Ken enjoyed taking road trips all over the country with Martie, helping the Ameristar in Blackhawk pay its electric bills and playing golf with the old guys at the Olde Course. More than anything, he loved spending time with his grandchildren - attending their school and sporting events, teaching them to fish and making up silly songs and stories for them. Ken was a bit of a crusty character with a sense of humor and a heart of gold. He will be missed by those who loved him. Ken is survived by his wife, Martie Jurkofsky, son and daughter-in-law, Drew and Cherie Jurkofsky, grandchildren, Morgan and Isaac Jurkofsky, father-in-law, Calvin Hanson, mothers-in-law, Hazel Dunn and Dee Hanson, sister, Janice Parker, brothers, Paul, Robert and Michael Jurkofsky, sister-in-law, Doris Kuhn, brothers-in-law, Edward and Paul Hanson and Donald, Lyman and Michael Wilkinson, goddaughter and niece, Heather Leppert, and numerous other nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life reception will be held at Viegut Funeral Home on Friday, July 21 from 1:00 - 3:00pm. He will be laid to rest in Lakeside Cemetery in Loveland, Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made in Ken's name to Viegut Funeral Home for the purchase of a park bench for the children's playground at Mehaffey Park. Ken was a cop that was dedicated to the city of Loveland. He gave it his all and had high morals. Looked to serve the children and the elderly above and beyond! Known as Ken the cop! I was proud of the job he did as a Detective solving crime. With his informants had many solved before they were committed! He worked undercover on his own when needed. just a all around good guy, husband, father, friend, and cop. We had our share of fun. His Sgt. Back in the olden Days! I know I am repeating what I said before but it maybe needs to be said again and again! He reminded me of Sgt Joe Friday on TV. Just the Facts. (Also) He could be serious! He ran the Lab an developed our film also for the Detective Bureau.
He is looking down on his son Drew with pride I know. Don Aten.

Ken served with a great deal of pride at the Loveland Police Department. He worked well with people of all ages from his youth fishing derby to the senior citizens that needed to brush up on crime prevention skills and scam prevention. I worked with Ken through Crime Stoppers of Larimer County, another example of the collaborative effort that Ken exemplified with his brother and sister officers and others involved in the criminal justice system.
The icing on the cake was my opportunity to serve with Ken's son, Drew, when he joined the Fort Collins Police Department. Our profession is better because of Ken's contributions.

I am very sorry to hear of Ken's passing, but I treasure the many times we spent together at work through the years. He was an exemplary officer and a great friend who was never afraid to share his truthful opinions with me, even when he disagreed. He built and made LPD many friends, particularly among the young and the older citizens, and Ken loved protecting and serving others. He was an excellent traffic accident investigator, whom we called out frequently for major accidents. I was always struck by the love he had for Martie and the pride he had in Drew. I am thankful for our friendship, and I am praying for all of you-- that you would fine comfort, wonderful memories and a joy in having spent a life with this talented and kind man who dedicated his life to being a professional public servant. God's peace on Martie, Drew and the family.

Ken was the epitome of what a law enforcement officer should be....and I'm sure that those people who knew him as I did feel the same way. He once told me that he just wanted to be only a street cop and had only the desire to protect and serve. And he did that with love, loyalty, and dedication, not only to his department but to everyone he ever met. He will be truly missed but his love of others will always live on. And remember the good times....always....for they are many!

Marti and Drew, I know there are no words that can make things better. Time does heal. We need to think about the many good times. He was a very good cop and Loveland is proud of him, as well as you and I are. Drew, he was proud of you also, as well as I am. Ken was known as "Ken the Cop" by a lot. High morals and he helped the elderly above and beyond. I was his Sgt in the 1970's when he was a Detective and he solved many cases and some before they even happened! He will be missed by many.
