Elsie Zadie Allen Hargrove died at a local hospital on May 3, 2011, at the age of 91 years. Graveside services will be held at 10:00a.m. this morning, May 5, 2011 at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Chaplain E.J. Chafin officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Viewing will be from 8:00a.m. to 9:30a.m. this morning at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be the grandsons and great-grandsons.
Elsie was born in the Elmdale community, Taylor County, TX on January 9, 1920 to William Perry and Mallie Woody Blankenship. She grew up and attended school in the Potosi community and married Lester Lee (Pete) Allen on November 2, 1937 in Abilene. Pete died December 1, 1941 in an accident at Paymaster Feed Mills.
As a widow, Elsie proudly worked for a short time as a welder in a Georgia shipyard during World War II, along with many other women who were later identified as "Rosie the Riveter." She later married Leslie Hargrove, January 4, 1954. He died June 9, 1979. Elsie worked at Timex Corporation for 13 years, Alieens for 5 years and in housekeeping at Hendrick Hospital for a few years.
Elsie dedicated her life to her family. She loved and was loved by all who knew her. She accepted Jesus as her savior when she was a teenager in the Church of Christ.
Mrs. Hargrove was predeceased by her parents, six sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include two children, Valda Deshazo of Abilene and Vernon Allen and wife, Pat of Eastland, TX; along with nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
