Hal Porter Obituary
Cisco
Hal Porter, of Abilene, formerly of Cisco, went to be with his Father on June 8, 2011. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Cisco on June 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.
He was born in Hammond, Indiana, on August 21, 1949. After graduating from High School in Indiana, he returned to Texas to play football at McMurry University. He spent 4 wonderful years in Abilene, where he met the love of his life and the most amazing lifetime friends. He married Margaret Cooper Porter on May 22, 1971 in Hamlin, Texas. After marriage Hal began "lighting lives" of many children in numerous school districts. He was a mentor and inspiration for every child that he taught and coached. After coaching for many years, Hal began a career in administration. He was a servant leader – serving the needs of countless teachers, school staff, parents, and most of all students. He never missed a game or an opportunity to cheer on a student-often arriving hours early. For the past 11 years, Hal served as the superintendent of Cisco I.S.D. and everyone knew that he was a proud Lobo.
He was a Christian man, and his favorite verse was Isaiah 40:31 – "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Hal was always the "rock" for his family. Words can not express the impact that he had on his family and all that knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Porter (of Abilene, TX), daughter Katy Meador and husband Chris (of Eldorado, TX), son Kelly Porter and Travis Rew (of San Francisco, CA). He was the proud grandfather "Papa" to Codee, Cooper and Cole Meador (of Eldorado, TX). He was also the loving brother to Debi Wehba and husband Ronnie (of Sweetwater, TX). He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Joyce Porter.
Memorials may be directed in Hal's memory to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). This was a cause that was very important to Codee's Papa.

Margaret, we remember you and Hal with fondness from your teaching days in Hale Center. We still live, actually a few blocks from where you all lived. Gary was the Ag teacher at the time. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We found out about Hal's passing through Judy Bowman. God Bless

Margret, I am so sorry for your loss, Hal was such a blessing to me and all that knew him. He had such a great influence on the kids that he coached and taught. He gave me my first job, and was such a great mentor to me. He was truly a great man, and will be missed.

Margaret, I just learned of Hal's passing, and am praying for you and your family in this time of great loss. Hal was such a great friend and teammate, and colleague. I always loved visiting with him at meetings, job fairs etc. One always felt better after visiting with Hal, no matter how briefly.

Mr. Porter spoke with passion and humor sharing with us his own personal walk with the Lord. Clearly his greatest gift was as an educator, but he also benefitted many others spreading God's word. I am honored to have met him.

Margaret and family,
I have known Hal for the last 8 years and truly know him as an outstanding leader. However, more importantly he was a great man, husband, father and PaPa. There are no words to stop the hurt but simply want to say that he made a difference. My prayer is that in time the pain will be replaced with great memories.

Mr. Porter was a great man! He was always so courteous to me and my girls at Jim Ned. He was a great example for me and everyone that knew him. Hal will be greatly missed by those who worked with him, played for him and loved him. I think what I remember the most is when Mr. Porter would catch me in the hallway at school and pinch me right on top of my shoulder by my neck or right about the elbow and walk me to class. He knew it hurt and I could almost see him smile as he said, "Todd...let me know if you get lost again and I will help you find your way."
He was a great father, principle, leader, husband, and friend. I will really miss him and am sad that it took a trajedy like this to bring back so many great memories.

What a life to be learned and inspired from. I can only imagine how many lives will continue to be touched as those who knew Mr. Proter continue to "pay forward" what they learned from him.
