Pat Bennett was a teacher, a fine poet, and a top-notch scholar. He was Professor personified. He was also a warm friend and a kind, supportive colleague to a junior Professor just starting out. He missed out on some promotions and advancement because he did not hold a PhD, but his biography of Edward Anderson and his Conversations with Texas Writers were such seminal works in the field of Texas literary studies is that there was not a PhD committee in the country that was fit to write an exam of for him.
He was also married to his beloved Shay for more than 60 years, and together they raised two sons t0 be proud of.
Later, when I was department chair,he came to me with the look of Wonder and his eyes and said, "Chuck! I am 66 years old! I don't have to grade papers anymore if I don't want to. " Although I was sorry to see him retire, his more than 20 year retirement was the time filled with joy and lots of reading and writing. When he retired, the creative writing speaker series at McMurry University was renamed in his honor, and one of the great honors of my life was to have been invited to be one of those Knox Bennett authors. You are fondly remembered and will be missed.
