Wretha Whittle Wiley

Brooklyn, NY

Wretha Whittle was born in Abilene, Texas on August 7, 1935, to Mr. and Mrs. Herman L. Whittle. She attended Abilene Schools, graduating from Abilene High School in 1953. She was in the National Honor Society and active on the Debate Team.

She graduated from Hardin Simmons College (now Hardin Simmons University) with honors in 1957, where she was also active on the Debate Team during her years there.

She received a two-year Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship to Union Theological Seminary in New York. In 1959 she went to the University of Syracuse for a graduate degree in English Literature.

She married Dr. George Wiley in 1961 and moved to New York.

They moved to Washington, DC in 1966. She owned and operated the Franz Bader Art Gallery in Washington, DC for a number of years and then moved back to New York to be close to her children.

Wretha died January 8, 2013 at the age of 77 years.

Wretha is survived by her children Daniel Wiley and Maya Wiley - both of Brooklyn, New York; son-in-law, Harlan Mandell; granddaughters, Naja and Kia; her sister, Sandra Broesche of Abilene, Texas; an aunt, Lucile Blackburn of El Paso, Texas; and numerous cousins.

There will be a celebration of her life on April 27, 2013.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
