Wynant Wilson Obituary

Wynant Stone Wilson

Abilene, TX

Wynant Stone Wilson, 87, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 27, surrounded by his family singing hymns and reading the Psalms.

A Memorial Service will be held at Piersall Funeral Home, 733 Butternut St., Friday, March 02 at 2pm.

Wynant was born on October 19, 1930 in Dallas, TX to parents Joseph M. and Ruth E. Wilson, where he grew up, except for a brief stint in San Antonio and Houston. He had two younger sisters and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1948, where he lettered in swimming and was Junior National Champion in the 1500-meter freestyle, and was also State Rifle Champion.

He attended the University of Texas, where he was known as "Stoney," won the Southwest Conference 100-yard freestyle championship in 1952 and was co-captain of the team. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi. He was invited to the Olympic trials in 1952 and graduated with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering in 1953. In 1996 he was inducted into the UT Sports Hall of Fame.

He then received his commission as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Air Force and was inducted and sent to Nagoya, Japan and Itami Airbase.

On returning from the service he was employed as a geologist and petroleum engineer until in 1960 he became an independent petroleum consulting geologist, formed Wynant S. Wilson, Inc. in 1979 and served as president, chief geologist and engineer until his death.

On June 24, 1961, he married Judy Kay Jones, whom he first saw clad in her cheerleading uniform at an Abilene High football game. They made their home in Abilene and to this union was born three sons.

Wynant was a member of East Dallas Presbyterian Church and St. Paul Methodist, Abilene. In 1975 he was baptized and led his family to Abilene Bible Church, where he faithfully served until 2013. He and Judy attended Discovery Center Fellowship until the present.

Though Wynant was a man of meticulous detail, the mere facts of his life don't tell the whole story. From his boyhood, Wynant was full of adventure and extreme gregariousness, both of which defined him and affected first his sons and then all who knew him. He never met a stranger and wrote down every name with whom he shook hands. He was an expert water and snow skier, and an even better teacher of those to his children and grandchildren. He was a marksman, hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman and of course, wildcatter.

In 1990, he felt called of the Lord to partner with Child Evangelism Fellowship and launched Good News Clubs and 5-Day Clubs in the Abilene area. He shared the with gospel with hundreds of children and trained many young people to share the good news of Christ until his "retirement" in 2016.

His impact as a husband, father, grandfather and "evangelist" can never be fully measured; the legacy that he leaves is rare and eternal.

Wynant was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Piddle Melton. He is survived by his sister, Alice Burke; wife, Judy; son, Joe Wilson; son and daughter-in-law, Derrick and Russellann Wilson; son and daughter-in-law Wesley and Heather Wilson, all of Dallas; and grandchildren, Cassia, Alizah, Heston, Eli, Alyssia, Lydia, James and Gloria.

Wynant will be missed on the streets of Brookhollow. He always had a ready smile and a big wave to fellow walkers. Such a happy man. Our prayers are with you.

I was so sorry to hear about Wynant's passing. He was a wonderful person and I really enjoyed working with him in the oil and gas business. His integrity was unquestionable and he was as enthusiastic as anyone I ever met. He lived an excellent life and will be missed.
