Janet Elaine Codling

1942 - 2026

Janet Elaine Hess Codling, age 83, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026 surrounded by her family.

Janet was born on March 12, 1942, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Sherman and June Hess. She was the fourth of ten children, growing up in a close-knit and hardworking family.

After graduating from North Fremont High School, she served a mission in the Billings Montana Mission where she taught and baptized many into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Janet spoke of her mission often and expressed it was a true highlight of her life.

She married Charles Vail Codling on December 19, 1964. Although the marriage later ended in divorce, Janet devoted her life to raising their five children. Returning to her childhood home and family farm, in Ashton, Idaho, with an unwavering work ethic, she raised her children in faith and deep spiritual commitment.

Janet was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ was central to her life. She was fiercely dedicated to her children and committed to teaching them faith in the Savior, belief in the healing power of prayer, appreciation for temple worship, and the eternal nature of family relationships.

She taught by example-how to work hard, make sacrifices for those we love, and enjoy life together. Janet found joy in being active with her family and created cherished memories through ice fishing, four-wheeling, camping, gardening, and time spent with her children and grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and June Hess, and her siblings Bill Hess, Dean Hess, Virginia Tolman, Mary Mitchell, Nada Leonardson, and Jessie Hadley.

She is survived by her siblings Gail Clyde, Bruce Hess, and David Hess; her children Vail (Teresa) Codling of Rigby, Idaho; Dean (Deanna) Codling of Gilbert, Arizona; Craig (Lenita) Codling of Herriman, Utah; Heidi (Peter) Sentz of Spanish Fork, Utah; and Cory (Heidi) Codling of St. Anthony, Idaho; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, with three more great-grandchildren on the way; and her close friend of 40 years, Linda Brechbill.

Services for Janet will include a viewing from Saturday, January 10, 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Baxter Funeral Home in Ashton, Idaho, followed by graveside services at 11:00 a.m. at Pineview Cemetery.

Janet will be remembered for her unwavering faith, tireless devotion to her family, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life. Her legacy of love, faith, and hard work will continue through generations.
